Patent number: 11851026Abstract: An access panel at and on a cab step of a vehicle is provided for access to a compartment of the vehicle. In some instances, the access panel includes a tread portion and a riser portion such that the access panel has a substantially L-shape. A pair of hinge components are coupled to an internal surface of the access panel such that the access panel can be hingedly displaced between a closed position and an opened position. In the closed position, the access panel covers and protects the compartment within the vehicle, and in the opened position the access panel provides a user or mechanic access to the compartment. The compartment may contain wiring, batteries, gears, etc., that need to undergo routine maintenance, emergency fixes, or diagnostic tests.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 2020Date of Patent: December 26, 2023Assignee: PACCAR IncInventors: Jordan Michael Fisher, Jon David Polzin, Piotr Stegawski, Nicholas Coe Outlaw

Publication number: 20230278648Abstract: The disclosed technology relates to a moveable panel, such as a fairing, of a vehicle, such as a semi-truck. For a number of reasons, it may be desirable to gain access to the area behind the fairing, for example, to access batteries, air/gas tanks, auxiliary power units, and/or other components that are mounted to the vehicle frame. In order to move the fairing with respect to the vehicle frame, one or more examples of a mounting system are provided that enables the fairing to pivot/swing away from the vehicle frame in a first direction (e.g., forward toward the front wheel). In some embodiments, the fairing may also pivot/swing away from the frame in a second direction (e.g., rearward toward the rear wheels) opposite the first direction. This multiple pivoting/swinging movement of the fairing enables access to different locations behind the fairing.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2022Publication date: September 7, 2023Inventors: Piotr Stegawski, Jeffrey Bobrowski
