  • Publication number: 20020015548
Abstract: A polarization device is disclosed that provides versatility in achieving a desired polarization state of an optical signal. Current polarization controllers are provided with two or three control sections to induce &lgr;/4 or &lgr;/2 changes in the received optical signal. However, once designed, those controller have a fixed polarization mode of operation. The electro-optical polarization controller disclosed comprises a lithium niobate substrate having an optical waveguide for propagation of an optical signal with separate first, second, third and fourth control sections sequentially formed in cascaded fashion along the length of the waveguide. Each control section is provided with driver electrodes arranged to be driven with suitable electrical control signals to induce electro-optical birefringence in the waveguide along its respective control section length of the optical waveguide.

  • Publication number: 20020006246
Abstract: A packaged integrated optical component comprises a substrate or chip housed in the package and having an optical waveguide within which an optical signal propagates. A photodetector disposed relative to the waveguide collects light that leaks from the optical waveguide and scattered into the substrate. In particular, the photodetector is disposed below the substrate waveguide or below a plane of a lower surface of the substrate so that its field of detection for scattered light in the substrate is sufficiently enhanced to provide for successful optical signal monitoring.

  • Patent number: 5917642
Abstract: An optical modulator for duobinary modulation is based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer but has parallel optical waveguides of a greater length than normally is employed with an optical modulator. A pair of similar electrode structures are arranged in series on the waveguides, the electrodes of the two structures being separately addressable by binary electrical signals. The phase shifts induced in the light propagating along the parallel waveguides by voltages applied to the separate electrode structures allows the output to take values of 0, 1 or 2 for binary inputs applied to the structures.
