  • Patent number: 10554072
Abstract: A system and method of using light-energy to communicate with a packaged computing device is described. In some embodiments, an optical detector of the computing device stored in a container receives light energy through a light-transparent window of the container. In some embodiments, the light energy is used to charge a battery of the computing device while the computing device is in the container. In some embodiments, a pre-defined pattern of light pulses is used to transition the computing device between a sleep state and a wake state while the computing device is in the container.

  • Patent number: 10164220
Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to graphene-based battery packaging. In one aspect, the graphene-based battery packaging can include an assembly of translucent members, including a thin graphene-based member which can be embodied or can comprise a film of graphene layers, a film of graphene oxide, or a combination thereof. In another aspect, the graphene-based member can be assembled to form an interlayer between two of the translucent members in the assembly. In certain aspects, each of the two translucent members can be embodied in or can include a thermoplastic material. In another aspect, at least one of the translucent members in the assembly can be doped with aggregates that provide a predetermined color to the assembly. In one aspect, the graphene-based member can provide substantive isolation between translucent members separated thereby, thus mitigating diffusion of atoms, molecules, and/or particulates between such members.

  • Patent number: 10147926
Abstract: In an implementation, an electrode is produced that includes a recessed region of an electrode material layer. The electrode can be part of a battery that provides power to an electronic device. The recessed region can expose a portion of a metal layer of the electrode. A tab can be coupled to the exposed portion of the metal layer. The tab can provide an external connection for the battery to provide power to components of the electronic device. The battery can be included in a battery package that includes a packaging material. A sealing material can be used to seal the tab at a location of the battery package where the tab extends beyond a periphery of the battery package.

  • Patent number: 9836114
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for optimizing battery life in an electronic device. The device is configured to make periodic assessments of battery capacity by measuring the DC resistance value of the battery cell during the execution of a power-consuming operation. If the measured DC resistance value reaches a threshold level, the device can initiate a power-saving mode in which an operating parameter of the device is adjusted to decrease power consumption.

  • Patent number: 9837681
Abstract: A small capacity battery for powering electronic devices, such as an e-book reader, is provided. This small capacity battery is designed to produce low area-specific resistance, which maintains usable operating voltages even during periods of high current draw. As a result, a lighter and smaller form-factor battery may provide the same battery capacity as a larger and heavier conventional battery. A user may then be provided with a lightweight and small form-factor electronic device that achieves an extended battery life.

  • Patent number: 9368285
Abstract: An embedded power cell is formed by placing a cathode, anode, and electrolyte within a recess in an enclosure. The enclosure thus acts as part of an overall device and also contains the embedded power cell, eliminating the need for dedicated packaging for the power cell. In one implementation, a low-profile lithium ion battery with a polymerized electrolyte may be sealed within the enclosure. Other devices such as a cell temperature sensor, battery controller, and so forth may also be embedded within the enclosure.

  • Publication number: 20150078586
Abstract: Devices such as tablets, smartphones, media players, and so forth may incorporate a fingerprint sensor to support acquisition of biometric identification data. As described herein, input data from the fingerprint sensor may be used to control one or more functions of the device. The function controlled may be based at least in part on context of one or more applications executing on the device, direction of motion, and so forth. In one implementation, movement parallel to the fingerprint sensor may modify audio volume settings on the device.
