  • Patent number: 5170966
Abstract: A safety device for an emergency landing of an aircraft has a runaway. A unit for retarding the speed of the aircraft is mounted in the runway and includes a plurality of rows of juxtaposed rotary bearing members, each of which is provided with a friction surface, a plurality of rotatable shafts, each of which carries each row of the rotary bearing members, and a hydraulic unit provided in each row of the rotary bearing members. A unit for braking the speed of the aircraft is fixed in the runway downstream of the retarding unit and includes a plurality of rows of juxtaposed stationary bearing members, each of which is provided with a friction surface. A unit for supporting and guiding the aircraft to move on the runway includes a base slidable on the retarding unit and the braking unit and a preventing unit for preventing the aircraft from being released from the base after the aircraft lands on the base. The safety device further includes a fire-retarding fluid provided in the runway.

  • Patent number: 5127490
Abstract: An emergency descent device includes a casing, a rotation retarding device, a suspension gear pulley, a cable extending around the suspension gear pulley and a cable guiding unit. The cable guiding unit includes a pair of spaced upper rollers and a lower roller provided under a point between the two spaced rollers. A cable has a descending portion and an ascending portion, which is frictionally passed around the suspension gear pulley. Each of the two end portions of a cable pass between one of the pair of spaced rollers and the lower roller. When one end of the cable is pulled, an additional frictional force occurs which arrests the fall of the pulled end of the cable.

  • Patent number: 4688659
Abstract: An emergency descent device includes a fluid-filled chamber with telescopic vanes of variable vane surface for self-adjusting the retarding force of the fluid, and an annular friction member in the chamber for simultaneous rotation with the vane members when the centrifugal force of the vane members is increased and the vane members extend radially outward to reach and engage with the annular friction member.

  • Patent number: 4554997
Abstract: An improved descent device including a rotating spool on which is wound a cable is provided with a fluid rotation-retarding means having a plurality of vane members mounted for rotation in a fluid-filled chamber. The vane member is comprised of a vane shell receiving a vane core which is normally biassed in a radially inward direction and is extensible from the vane shell by centrifugal force. The retarding force depends on the contact surfaces between the vane members and the fluid which vary with centrifugal force.
