    Abstract: Magnetorheological (MR) fluids, dispersions of magnetically soft particles in fluids (gases, liquids, or semi-solids such as greases), are disclosed. The present invention uses the initial steps of a sol-gel process to assist in preparation of MR fluids that have significantly enhanced stability and redispersibility, without the use of ceramic particles such as silica or bridging polymers such as PVP.

    Abstract: A magnetorheological (MR) fluid including magnetically soft particles suspended in a carrier solvent is disclosed. The MR fluid also includes additive particles of smaller size than the magnetically soft particles and a bridging polymer. The additive particles and polymer form a gel-like material which provides a blanket or coating around the magnetically soft particles. The MR fluids possess improved stability and redispersibility, as well as favorable mechanical properties.

Integrated circuit (IC) densities have necessitated the use of ultrahigh purity process fluids in state of the art fabrication facilities. It is the purpose of the present invention to synthesize monodispersed submicron particles of some representative contaminants, such as ultrafine oxide particles, using organized reaction media, and study their characteristics in relation to their removal from process fluids.
