Patent number: 4871507Abstract: A method and apparatus of forming a hollow partially crystalline heat set biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate container having a hemispherical base comprising blowing a heated parison at orientation temperature outwardly against the confines of a mold which is at heat setting temperature wherein the side wall and the major portion of the base of the container are subjected to a heat setting temperature and the center of the base of the container is subjected to a temperature not greater than 150.degree. C. so that the central portion is crystallized a substantially lesser amount than the side wall and the major portion of the base. The container is then quenched. The resultant container can be formed at a rapid cycle and has good drop impact properties and obviates the problems of sticking to the hot mold or blow out when the hot mold is opened.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 1988Date of Patent: October 3, 1989Assignee: Owens-Illinois Plastic Products Inc.Inventor: Prakash R. Patent number: 4764403Abstract: A multilayer biaxially oriented heatset article and method of making forming a preform comprising an outer layer and an inner layer of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), an intermediate layer of olefin-vinyl alcohol copolymer, a layer of adhesive laminating the olefin-vinyl alcohol copolymer layer and the outer layer and a layer of adhesive laminating the inner olefin-vinyl alcohol copolymer layer and the inner layer. The preform is then heated to orientation temperature and blown against a heatset hot mold to produce an article such as a container that has high barrier properties, improved thermal stability, i.e., capable of being hot filled at elevated temperatures, have layer uniformity, good interlayer adhesion., good transparency and is light in weight.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1986Date of Patent: August 16, 1988Assignee: Owens-Illinois Plastic Products Inc.Inventor: Prakash R. Ajmera

Patent number: 4713270Abstract: A high barrier heatset intimate fusion blend article is disclosed where the article includes a blend of a high barrier copolyester, formed from terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol and 1,3 bis(2-hydroxyethoxy) benzene, and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The PET/copolyester blend articles are formed using a blowmolding and heatsetting process to rapidly achieve a high percentage of crystallinity of the PET in the article. The articles have excellent gas barrier and mechanical strength properties, high thermal stability and remain optically clear after heatsetting.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1986Date of Patent: December 15, 1987Assignee: Owens-Illinois Plastic Products Inc.Inventors: Saleh A. Patent number: 4713269Abstract: A hollow transparent delamination resistant heatset multilayer article is disclosed where the article includes at least one barrier layer containing a copolyester formed from terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol and 1,3 bis(2-hydroxyethoxy) benzene directly adhered to at least one layer containing poly(ethylene) terephthalate (PET). The multilayer articles are blowmolded using a heatsetting process. The heatset multilayer articles retain high gas barrier properties, uniform thickness in layers, and desirable mechanical strength properties even after the heatsetting process. Also, the multilayer heatset articles have excellent interlayer adhesion without the need for an adhesive layer, high thermal stability, and remain optically clear after the heatsetting process.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1986Date of Patent: December 15, 1987Assignee: Owens-Illinois Plastic Products Inc.Inventors: Saleh A.
