The system creates one or more secondary copies of primary data that contains multiple data objects. The system may maintain a first data structure that tracks the data objects for which the system has created secondary copies and the locations of the secondary copies. To archive data objects in the primary data, the system identifies data objects to be archived, verifies that previously-created secondary copies of the identified data objects exist, and replaces the identified data objects with stubs. The system may maintain a second data structure that both tracks the stubs and refers to the first data structure, thereby creating an association between the stubs and the locations of the secondary copies.

For instance, the smart network topology system may provide predefined network topology types that an administrator can use when setting up network connectivity between client devices and other network devices such as media agents, storage servers, and the like. Further, the smart network topology system provides the user with a way to customize the routes created between the client computing devices and storage computing devices such that each client computing device is configured to communicate with only those storage computing devices that the client computing device needs to communicate with to perform one or more data protection operations.

In one aspect, a data file is made accessible while being offline by converting the data file from a native format to a preview format, storing the data file in the preview format in a primary storage that is locally available and moving, after the conversion to the preview format, the data file in the native format to a secondary storage. When a viewing request is received for the data file, the data file in the preview format is displayed to fulfill the viewing request.

Abstract: Indexing preferences generally associate each data source with a type of indexing technology and/or with an index/catalog and/or with a computing device that hosts the index/catalog for tracking backup data generated from the source data. Indexing preferences govern which index/catalog receives transaction logs for a given storage operation. Thus, indexing destinations are defined granularly and flexibly in reference to the source data. Load balancing without user intervention assures that the various index/catalogs are fairly distributed in the illustrative backup systems by autonomously initiating migration jobs. Criteria for initiating migration jobs are based on past usage and going-forward trends. An illustrative migration job re-associates data sources with a different destination media agent and/or index/catalog, including transferring some or all relevant transaction logs and/or indexing information from the old host to the new host.

Abstract: Techniques for enabling user search of content stored in a file archive include providing a search interface comprising a search rules portion and an action rules portion, receiving a file archive search criterion comprising at least one search rule, and searching the file archive using the search criterion. The techniques also include generating a set of files filtered using the search criterion and performing an action specified in the action rules portion on a file included in the set of files.

The system can provide for an index, or catalog, for identifying and enabling restoration of backup data located on a storage device. The system further maintains a set of transaction logs generated by media agent modules that identify metadata with respect to individual data chunks of a backup file on the storage device. A copy of the catalog and transaction logs can be stored at a location accessible by each of the media agent modules. In this manner, in case of a failure of one media agent module during backup, the transaction logs and existing catalog can be used by a second media agent module to resume the backup operation without requiring a restart of the backup process.
