  • Patent number: 8605710
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving a channel change response time are disclosed. A meta channel associated with an original and auxiliary media streams is generated. The information conveyed by the meta channel is propagated toward at least one user device. The user device may receive the meta channel information and select one of the media streams using the meta channel information in response to a channel change request from a user terminal, or a network device may select one of the media streams for a user terminal in response to a channel change request from the user terminal.

  • Patent number: 8533272
Abstract: The invention includes a method and apparatus for notification and delivery of messages to mobile users using a secure client associated with a user device. The secure client includes a power module, a communication module, a storage module, and an alert module. The power module powers the client device independent of a power state of the user device. The communication module receives a wake-up message and responsively triggers the secure client to switch from an inactive state to an active state without changing the power state of the user device, initiates a secure connection with a secure gateway in response to the wake-up message, and requests and receives a user message from a messaging application using the secure connection. The storage module stores the received message independent of the power state of the user device. The alert module activates an alert to indicate that the message is available.

  • Patent number: 8150998
Abstract: For use with a path vector routing protocol, a system and method for increasing alternative network route convergence speed and a border gateway router incorporating the system or the method. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a router information base (RIB) data receiver, associated with a network, that receives RIB data including: (1a) an update of an active route to a domain in the network that causes the active route to become a withdrawn route and (1b) indications, based on loopback addresses associated with nodes through which the withdrawn route passed, of a reachability of the each of the nodes and (2) route disqualification logic, associated with the RIB data receiver, that disqualifies alternative routes to the domain based on the indications.

  • Patent number: 8045453
Abstract: Congestion in connection-oriented data networks is alleviated by simulating the rerouting of circuits to uncongested parts of the network and then rerouting such circuits in a manner that causes little, or no, disruption to other parts of the network.

  • Publication number: 20110061084
Abstract: The invention includes a method and apparatus for improving a channel change response time. A method includes propagating a plurality of media streams toward at least one user terminal using a respective plurality of multicast groups and propagating a meta channel toward the at least one user terminal for conveying information adapted for use in selecting one of the media streams in a manner tending to improve the channel change response time. The media streams include an original media stream conveying media content and at least one auxiliary media stream, generated from the original media stream, where each of the at least one auxiliary media stream conveys the media content of the original media stream, where each of the at least one auxiliary media stream is offset in time with respect to the original media stream. The information conveyed by the meta channel is associated with the media streams.

  • Patent number: 7693069
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improved inter-domain routing convergence, include transmitting reason information associated with a route update or withdraw. An apparatus receiving the reason information associated with the update or withdraw uses the reason information to determine which of its candidate routes are also affected by substantially the same event that triggered the initial route update or withdraw and which of its candidate routes are not affected. For example, a candidate route may be considered to be transient if the apparatus receiving the reason information determines from the received reason information that a candidate route is going to be updated or withdrawn in the near future due. A candidate route considered as a transient route is avoided being advertised as a preferred route.

  • Patent number: 7573811
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing link state routing protocol redundancy in a router. A router includes an active controller and at least one standby controller. An internal adjacency relationship is established between the active controller and the standby controller to enable automatic switchover upon disablement of said active controller. The adjacency relationship is established by mirroring configuration data on a standby controller from an active controller, synchronizing Hello information between the active and standby controllers, and synchronizing database information between the active and standby controllers.

  • Publication number: 20030123457
Abstract: The present invention is an OSPF flooding proxy mechanism for taking advantage of a distributed hardware architecture to achieve a highly scaleable OSPF implementation capable of supporting a large number of nodes in an area. Given the widespread interest in MPLS explicit route based traffic engineering within an autonomous system and given that most TE mechanisms work best when complete network topology is available, such an OSPF implementation is highly desirable. Also, the next generation terabit router architectures with multiple levels of processor hierarchies and spanning multiple shelves make such protocol implementations very compelling. One embodiment of the invention includes an apparatus for communicating an intra-autonomous system link state routing protocol with nodes in a network. The apparatus includes a controller having at least one processor associated therewith for performing route calculation and maintaining a link state database of said network.

  • Patent number: 6574686
Abstract: An arrangement having a service fiber and a protection fiber connected to different I/O modules that are connected to an ATM switch. The switching functions necessary for achieving protection are realized through cooperation between the CPUs on the I/O modules of the service and the protection lines and the ATM switch fabric. The line selected has its frame buffer open, while the line in the standby mode has its frame buffer closed. In the other direction, traffic is multi-cast onto both the service and the protection lines by the ATM processing unit. In this manner, the protection fiber always contains information, ready to be switched from standby mode into active mode.
