  • Publication number: 20080123610
Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for a shared antenna control using the output of a voice activity detector are provided. A single radio chip for use within a wireless device may handle communication of a Bluetooth (BT) and a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) protocol via a single antenna. Simultaneous reception via BT and WLAN channels may be enabled. The single radio chip may enable detection of voice activity in the BT channel and may reduce the BT transmission priority level some time after the voice activity indicates that the BT channel is not transmitting voice information to enable error concealment. Voice activity detection may be based on PCM samples in the BT channel. The single radio chip may transmit an ACK signal to an access point after the BT transmission priority level is reduced.

  • Publication number: 20080043705
Abstract: Methods and systems for enabling coexistence of multiple potentially interfering wireless components in a device are provided. A device may include a wireless module using a proprietary protocol and one or more modules using standardized protocols. The device further includes a coexistence arbitration module configured to arbitrate access to a shared communication medium among the wireless modules based on assertion of medium access requests by the modules and the associated priority of the asserted medium access requests. When multiple medium access requests have the same priority, precedence for access to the shared medium is determined based on additional criteria. The coexistence arbitration module may be a separate module or may be integrated into another module or distributed among the modules. The device may include a host processor for altering transmission characteristics of a module to increase the likelihood that another module can receive data within a reasonable time period.

  • Patent number: 7301993
Abstract: A method and apparatus for channel estimation in a spread spectrum receiver include processing that begins by despreading a received spread spectrum complex baseband sample utilizing a pseudorandom spreading sequence to produce a despread baseband symbol. The processing continues by filtering the despread baseband symbol to attenuate adverse channel effects based on a channel response estimate to produce a filtered despread baseband symbol. The processing then continues by decoding the filtered despread baseband symbol to produce recaptured data. The processing continues by modulating the recaptured data to produce a remodulated symbol. The processing then continues by producing a reconstructed spread spectrum complex baseband sample from the remodulated symbol based on the pseudorandom spreading sequence.

  • Publication number: 20070224936
Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for transmit power control techniques to reduce mutual interference between coexistent wireless networks are provided. A coexistence terminal comprising a WLAN radio and a Bluetooth radio operating as a master device may transmit signals to one or more remote controllers comprising a slave Bluetooth radio to increase transmission power when the isolation between the coexistence terminal's WLAN and Bluetooth radios is below a threshold. Link manager protocol (LMP) signals may be utilized for changing the transmission power. When the isolation increases above the threshold, signals may be generated to reduce the remote controllers' transmission power. In some instances, in addition to increasing the transmission power of remote controllers, the transmission power of the Bluetooth radio or the WLAN radio may be reduced. The reduced Bluetooth or WLAN radio transmission power may be increased when the radio isolation in the coexistence terminal increases.

  • Publication number: 20070223430
Abstract: Certain aspects of a method and system for providing wireless communication may include a single integrated circuit (IC) that handles communication for at least a Bluetooth (BT) connection and a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) connection by controlling transmission of acknowledgement signals based on a measured voice quality for one or both of the BT connection and the WLAN connection. The transmission of the acknowledgement signals communicated from the mobile station to an access point may be controlled. A BT priority signal may be asserted if data to be transmitted comprises high quality voice (HV3) data. The transmission of the acknowledgement signals may be controlled by raising a priority of an asserted WLAN priority signal higher than a priority of the asserted BT priority signal. The voice data may be transmitted via high quality voice (HV3) frames over the BT connection based on the asserted WLAN priority signal.

  • Publication number: 20070207751
Abstract: A radio receiver is described that processes multiple wireless standards using a single antenna according to embodiments of the invention. The radio receiver includes a single antenna, and a low noise amplifier that is connected to the antenna, without an intervening power divider or power splitter. The output of the low noise amplifier feeds multiple wireless receivers in a parallel arrangement that are operating according to different communications standards, including for example a Bluetooth receiver, and a WLAN 802.11 receiver. Additional wireless standards and their corresponding receivers could be added as well. The input impedance of the low noise amplifier defines the impedance seen by the antenna, regardless of which operational standard is actually in use. Since the input impedance of the low noise amplifier is substantially independent of whether the Bluetooth or WLAN paths are ON or OFF, simultaneous operation can be accomplished.

  • Publication number: 20070060055
Abstract: Certain embodiments of the invention may be found in a method and system for antenna and radio front-end topologies for a system-on-a-chip (SOC) device that combines Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 b/g WLAN technologies. A single chip radio device that supports WLAN and Bluetooth technologies receives a WLAN signal in a WLAN processing circuitry of the radio front-end and in a Bluetooth processing circuitry of the radio front-end. Signals generated by the WLAN processing circuitry and the Bluetooth processing circuitry from the received WLAN signal may be combined in a diversity combiner that utilizes selection diversity gain combining or maximal ratio combining (MRC). When a generated signal is below a threshold value, the signal may be dropped from the combining operation. A single antenna usage model may be utilized with the single chip radio device front-end topology to support WLAN and Bluetooth communications.

  • Publication number: 20060274704
Abstract: Certain embodiments of the invention may be found in a method and system for collaborative coexistence between Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 g with both technologies integrated onto an SOC device. In a single integrated circuit (IC) that handles Bluetooth and WLAN technologies, a WLAN priority level may be selected for WLAN transmissions and a Bluetooth priority level may be selected for Bluetooth transmissions. The WLAN and Bluetooth priority levels may be selected from a plurality of priority levels. A packet transfer scheduler (PTS) may schedule the transmission of WLAN and Bluetooth signals in accordance with the selected priority levels. In some instances, the PTS may promote or demote the priority levels for WLAN and/or Bluetooth transmissions based on traffic needs.

  • Publication number: 20060084383
Abstract: A method and system for collocated IEEE 802.11 b/g WLAN, and Bluetooth (BT) with FM in coexistent operation are provided. A single chip comprising an integrated BT radio and an integrated FM radio in a coexistence station may generate a priority signal to disable WLAN transmissions in a WLAN radio when a BT HV3 frame is available for transmission. When the priority signal is asserted, an exponentially growing retransmission backoff mechanism in the WLAN radio may be disabled. Moreover, when the BT radio and the WLAN radio are enabled for coexistence operation, a WLAN fragmentation threshold in the WLAN radio may be modified based on a WLAN modulation rate and the BT HV3 frame duration. An on-chip processor that time multiplexes FM and Bluetooth data processing may be utilized to control the BT radio operation and the FM radio operation in the single chip.

  • Patent number: 6324228
Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for tracking a frequency of a signal. The received signal is converted to an intermediate frequency (IF) signal using a frequency reference. An automatic gain control (AGC) is provided to the IF signal. The AGC generates a control value.
