  • Patent number: 9154463
Abstract: The present invention facilitates automatic discovery of VPN-related information, which relates to the existence or association of VPNs as supported by provider edge devices in a core network. In particular, the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is used to facilitate the automatic discovery, and the provider edge devices are capable of subsequently and automatically triggering Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) processes to facilitate signaling over LDP sessions within the core network.

  • Patent number: 8937945
Abstract: Various embodiments provide a method and apparatus for processing incoming packets in an efficient manner. A service ID bitmap indicating available services associated with the user is established. The available services are grouped into service set. Common service set having common set of rules is determined. A user associated with common service set and incoming traffic is identified. The incoming traffic is processed according to the common set of rules indicated by the service ID bitmap. The efficient use of Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) results in faster search result, lower power consumption and chip footprint among others.

  • Patent number: 8868745
Abstract: A number of route tables are stored in a server at the edge of a service provider network, and are used to connect a set of customer sites to VPNs provided by the service provider. The forwarding entries in the route tables describe how packets conveyed over associated VPNs are to be forwarded between the service provider network and customer equipment systems. The disclosed system provides a configuration process for the route table including a route count limit as a parameter. The route count limit parameter provided through the configuration process is associated with the route table, and may be stored at the provider edge system, as well as at each other packet forwarding device within the network infrastructure of the service provider. Each forwarding device in the service provider infrastructure stores the route count limit, and further operates to keep track of the current number of routes inserted into the route table.

  • Patent number: 8560708
Abstract: A session bundle allocation capability enables dynamic allocation of bundles of sessions being handled by a network element to modules of the network element (e.g., modules such as processing modules configured to perform one or more of traffic processing, traffic switching, and like functions). A bundle of sessions may be allocated by associating a plurality of sessions to form thereby a bundle of sessions, and assigning the bundle of sessions to a processing module group including one or more processing modules configured for processing traffic for the sessions of the bundle of sessions. A bundle of sessions may have a bundle identifier associated therewith and may be migrated from a first processing module group to a second processing module group by changing a mapping of the bundle identifier from being associated with the first processing module group to being associated with the second processing module group.

  • Patent number: 7724651
Abstract: Providing a network service is disclosed. A data associated with the service is received. It is determined whether a local context associated with the service is in an active state with respect to the service. The data is redirected to another chassis, via an inter-chassis backup connection, if it is determined that the local context is not in an active state with respect to the service.

  • Patent number: 7486659
Abstract: A VR-VRF gateway enables VPN sites utilizing different VPN models, such as a virtual router based VPN and an IETF 2547 based VPN, to exchange routing information and communicate with each other over a VPN tunnel. Each VPN site on a VPN provides routing information to the VR-VRF gateway which stores the routing information in a routing table for that VPN. The routing information is distributed by the VR-VRF gateway to the other VPN sites. When the VR-VRF gateway receives a packet of data to be passed over the VPN tunnel, it accesses the routing table for the particular VPN to ascertain how the packet is to be routed, or the next hop attribute for the packet. Where the VR-VRF gateway is not configured to handle data traffic on the VPN tunnel, it populates routing entries on another network device on the VPN tunnel to enable the other network device to handle the actual traffic over the VPN tunnel.
