Publication number: 20240122499Abstract: Disclosed is a wearable inertial sensors (WIS) system and methods for real-time simultaneous tri-planar motion capture of the upper extremity (UE). The sensors simultaneously capture in the frontal, sagittal, and horizontal planes UE range of motion (ROM), which is critical to assess an individual's movement limitations and determine appropriate rehabilitative treatments. Off-the-shelf sensors and microcontrollers are used to develop the WIS system, which wirelessly streams real-time joint orientation for UE ROM measurement. Key developments include: (i) two novel approaches, using earth's gravity (EG approach) and magnetic field (EGM approach) as references, to correct misalignments in the orientation between the sensor and its housing to minimize measurement errors; (ii) implementation of the joint coordinate system (JCS)-based method for tri-planar ROM measurements for clinical use; and (iii) an in-situ guided mounting technique for accurate sensor placement and alignment on human body.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 16, 2021Publication date: April 18, 2024Inventors: Ashwin Rajkumar, Fabio Vulpi, Preeti Raghavan, Vikram Kapila

Patent number: 10350448Abstract: A bimanual arm trainer that provides therapeutic bimanual repetitive exercise to improve upper body movement and flexibility has a top support that is elevated relative to a ground surface. The trainer further includes: (a) first and second arm holders that are pivotable relative to the top support; and (b) first and second arm holder housings that are pivotably coupled to the top support and can be moved into a plurality of different positions and locked in place in one of the plurality of different positions relative to the top support. The first arm holder is pivotably coupled to the first arm holder and the second arm holder is pivotably coupled to the second arm holder. A reciprocating translation mechanism operatively connects the first and second arm holders such that the motion of one of the first and second arm holders is mirrored in the other of the first and second arm holders.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2016Date of Patent: July 16, 2019Assignee: MIRRORED MOTION WORKS, INC.Inventors: Donald J. Weisz, Preeti Raghavan, Frank Speranza

Patent number: 9549866Abstract: According to one embodiment, a rehabilitative training device for use with a stroke patient includes a first component that is operatively coupled to a first body part (unaffected body part) of the patient and a second component that is operatively coupled to a second body part (affected body part) of the patient. The first component and second component are operatively coupled to one another such that motion of the first component as a result of movement of the first body part by the user causes the second component and second body part to move in a symmetrical motion.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 2013Date of Patent: January 24, 2017Assignee: MIRRORED MOTION WORKS INCInventors: Donald J. Publication number: 20160144229Abstract: The present invention relates to a device or apparatus for aiding in upper extremity rehabilitation treatment. The apparatus is a portable mobile rehabilitation device which has first and second arms attached to the central fulcrum of a tabletop platform which is supported by a height adjustable side pillar and base piece. Each arm has 3 links or segments attached at the ends by detachable and adjustable rotating support which are termed as joints. The distal end of each arm has an end-effector which is a hand hold module that is attached to the distal part of the subject arm. The proximal end of each arm is attached to the central fulcrum. The arms along with the modules will provide support for the patient to move the arm at different joints either by passive movement or active assist movement.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 1, 2014Publication date: May 26, 2016Applicant: New York UniversityInventors: Viswanath Aluru, Preeti Raghavan
