  • Publication number: 20140333998
Abstract: A method and apparatus for nanoscopy comprising a salt microlens. The microlens-based nanoscope comprises a conventional microscope, a microlens, and a XYZ piezoelectric stage is shown (SEE FIG. 1A). The microlens is mounted on a Z-stage and can be driven to accomplish the scanning. The specimen is placed above the microlens which is a plano-convex lens. The set up employed for the Salt Microlens for Ultra-high Resolution Imaging (SAMURI) can use a halogen-tungsten lamp with a dominant wavelength at 600 nm. A magnified virtual image of the specimen is obtained when the distance between microlens and specimen is less than the focal length of the microlens. The virtual image can then be magnified by the microscope and captured by eyes or a CCD camera.

  • Publication number: 20080025875
Abstract: The subject invention provides novel and efficacious systems and methods for particle, chemical, and/or biocompound sensing. In one embodiment, the system of the invention comprises a sensing device that includes a membrane containing at least one nanochannel that spans all or substantially all of the thickness of the membrane. The nanochannel(s) of the invention can be functionalized to enhance target analyte detection and quantification. In one embodiment, the nanochannel is conically shaped and includes a molecular recognition agent for a target analyte. In certain operations, the sensing systems of the invention quantitatively and qualitatively detect biochemical/biomedical species and biomacromolecules, such as proteins, DNA, cells, spores and viruses, with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity.

  • Patent number: 6528603
Abstract: The present invention provides novel organic copolymers comprising alternating functional groups, wherein one functional group is phosphonate. In one embodiment, the copolymers comprise alternating phosphonate and N-substituted succinimide functional groups. In another embodiment, the copolymers are synthesized from maleimide and vinyl ether monomers, wherein the vinyl ether monomer possesses a pendant phosphonate functionality and the maleimide monomer is an N-substituted maleimide. Methods of synthesizing thin films with the novel organic copolymers, as well as chemical precipitation methods using the novel organic copolymers, are also provided.
