  • Publication number: 20100071384
Abstract: An exemplary refrigeration system for cooling food or beverages may use a liquid cooling system of a vehicle. The refrigeration system may include a compartment in which the food or beverages may be placed and removed, a chilled liquid coolant system having a connection through which liquid coolant is received from the liquid cooling system of the vehicle, and a heat exchanger operationally coupled with the chilled liquid coolant system and the compartment to transfer heat from the compartment into the liquid coolant. The refrigeration system may also include a second chilled coolant system through which a second coolant flows and a second heat exchanger operationally coupled with the second chilled coolant system and the compartment to transfer heat from the compartment. The chilled liquid coolant system and the second chilled coolant system may operate together as a cascade cooling system.

  • Publication number: 20100050665
Abstract: A refrigeration apparatus includes an air chiller including a fan, a storage enclosure defining a compartment, and a duct system. The air chiller blows chilled air into the duct system. The compartment has first and second openings, each of which is coupled to the duct system. Chilled air enters the first opening and exits the second opening, and vice versa. In one implementation, the first opening is at the top of the compartment and the second opening is at the bottom of the compartment. A control circuit may periodically cause the fan to change the direction of the chilled air flow. This effectively maintains a relatively uniform temperature throughout the compartment.

  • Patent number: 6574974
Abstract: An electronic controller for an automatic icemaker includes a thermistor coupled to an icemaker mold, a first transducer coupled to a rake, a second transducer coupled to a feeler arm, and a processor. Time and temperature dependent calculations are summed at successive time intervals and compared to a predetermined value to determine when ice is frozen and ready for harvesting. Harvesting is delayed a pre-selected time based upon the position of the feeler arm to avoid premature harvesting. A harvest fix algorithm is executed when ice is not harvested within a predetermined time period by operating a heater at an elevated temperature and by de-energizing a motor. A water fill algorithm determines whether the mold is full of water based upon a change in the thermistor reading.

  • Patent number: 6233964
Abstract: The present invention comprises a low height ice maker designed primarily for use in under counter applications. An ice retaining bin includes a top end opening covered in part by a top panel and the remaining part by an ice access door. The bin is secured to a base, the base retaining certain components of a refrigeration system including; a condenser, a compressor, an expansion valve and a hot gas defrost valve. The base also retains a water dump valve, the electronic control for the ice maker and the condenser fan. When the bin is secured to the base, front and rear access areas are defined which areas can be opened by removing releasably securable panels. The control electronics, the condenser fan and high and low side service valves are positioned adjacent the front access. The expansion valve, hot gas defrost valve and the dump valve are positioned adjacent the rear access. An ice cube forming evaporator assembly is secured to an interior surface of the bin.

  • Patent number: 6209340
Abstract: A modified water drain pan for use in an ice maker is positioned below a vertically oriented evaporator and includes a front lip for receiving run off water from the evaporator during an ice making cycle. The lip includes a plurality of spaced apart ice removing structures defining a V-shaped groove there along. The V-shaped groove is defined by a plurality of front and rear angled surfaces. In operation, when the ice is harvested, the ice sheet falls from the evaporator such that a bottom edge thereof lands within the V-shaped groove. The bottom edge of the ice sheet contacts a front surface of the V-shaped groove wherein the force applied there against by the weight of the entire sheet causes the sheet to rotate about an imaginary axis extending within and along that groove. As a result thereof, the top of the ice sheet tips in a forward direction away from the evaporator where upon it falls into an ice bin there below.
