  • Publication number: 20160085076
Abstract: Head-mounted display systems and methods of operation that allow users to couple and decouple a portable electronic device such as a handheld portable electronic device with a separate head-mounted device (e.g., temporarily integrates the separate devices into a single unit) are disclosed. The portable electronic may be physically coupled to the head-mounted device such that the portable electronic device can be worn on the user's head. The portable electronic device may be operatively coupled to the head-mounted device such that the portable electronic device and head mounted device can communicate and operate with one another. Each device may be allowed to extend its features and/or services to the other device for the purpose of enhancing, increasing and/or eliminating redundant functions between the head-mounted device and the portable electronic device.

  • Patent number: 8799815
Abstract: A portable electronic device displays a plurality of icons on a touch-sensitive display. The plurality of icons includes a folder icon that corresponds to a folder that contains a plurality of items. The folder icon includes respective selectable item indicators for at least some of the items in the folder. The device detects a finger gesture on the touch-sensitive display at a location that corresponds to the folder icon. In response to detecting the finger gesture on the touch-sensitive display at the location that corresponds to the folder icon, the device determines a respective item in the plurality of items in the folder that corresponds to the detected finger gesture and activates the respective item.

  • Publication number: 20110167350
Abstract: Systems, techniques, and methods are present for allowing a user to interact with the text in a touch-sensitive display in order to learn more information about the content of the text. Some examples can include presenting augmented text from an electronic book in a user-interface, the user-interface displayed in a touch screen; receiving touch screen input by the touch screen, the touch screen input corresponding to a portion of the augmented text; determining a command associated with the touch screen input from amongst multiple commands associated with the portion of the augmented text, each of the multiple commands being configured to invoke a function to present information regarding the portion of the augmented text; and presenting, based on the command associated with the received touch screen input, information corresponding to the identified portion of the augmented text.

  • Publication number: 20100162109
Abstract: A user interface having changeable topography is disclosed. The user interface can have a shape changeable surface that can selectively alter according to an input so as to provide changeable topography of the user interface. The surface can include individual nodes that can raise above or lower below the initial surface. Alternatively, the surface can include a shape changeable material that can change the shape of portions thereof into discrete shapes above or below the initial surface. Alternatively, the surface can include a deformable material that can deform portions thereof into discrete forms above or below the initial surface. The changeable topography can define different user interface layouts. The user interface can, for example, be associated with input and/or output devices, such as touch pads, touch screens, and the like.

  • Publication number: 20100079264
Abstract: Localized haptic feedback at discrete locations or regions of a surface is disclosed. Controllable haptic transmission nodes can be selectively controlled to transmit a haptic feedback signal to a surface. The nodes can be controlled between a first state that transmits the haptic feedback signal to the surface and a second state that dampens or prevents the haptic feedback signal to the surface. The nodes can be located around the perimeter of the surface, where each node can be associated with a particular location or region of the surface and can provide haptic feedback to that particular location or region when the node is selected. A touch surface of a touch sensitive device is an exemplary surface for using localized haptic feedback.
