  • Patent number: 9091622
Abstract: A calibration standard or check plug provides calibration standards in the permeability range of 10-10,000 nanoDarcy. The check plug is of similar exterior dimensions to a core sample that would be used with existing permeameters. The check plug is constructed from an impermeable material that is insensitive to moisture. The check plug has one or more channels of known diameter from which the permeability may be calculated. Methods for use thereof and methods of manufacture thereof are also disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 25, 2012
Date of Patent: July 28, 2015
    Assignee: ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company
Inventors: Somnath Sinha, Edward M. Braun, Quinn R. Passey, Sergio A. Leonardi, Alexander C. Wood, III, Timothy E. Zirkle, Ryan A. Kudva
  • Patent number: 8729903
Abstract: Method for assessing hydrocarbon source rock potential of a subsurface region without well log information. The method uses surface electromagnetic (121) and seismic (122) survey data to obtain vertical profiles of resistivity and velocity (123), which are then analyzed in the same way as well log data are analyzed by the well known Delta Log R method (124).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 31, 2010
Date of Patent: May 20, 2014
    Assignee: ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company
Inventors: Leonard J. Srnka, Quinn R. Passey, Kevin M. Bohacs, David R. Converse, Yaping Zhu

  • Patent number: 7331385
Abstract: Methods are provided that include the steps of providing wells in a formation, establishing one or more fractures (12) in the formation, such that each fracture intersects at least one of the wells (16, 18), placing electrically conductive material in the fractures, and generating electric current through the fractures and through the material such that sufficient heat (10) is generated by electrical resistivity within the material to pyrolyze organic matter in the formation into producible hydrocarbons.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 6918444
Abstract: A method for accelerating the conversion of kerogen to hydrocarbons in a subterranean formation containing organic-rich rock that is located in the vicinity of reservoir-quality strata. Sufficient heat is generated in the reservoir-quality strata such that it heats the organic-rich rock in the subterranean formation and accelerates the conversion of kerogen to hydrocarbons in the formation.
