    Abstract: A compact blood oxygenator has a minimal priming volume and is particularly advantageous for pediatric cardiac surgery. A generally rectangular housing has longitudinally spaced and interspersed heat exchanger conduit groups and oxygenator fiber bundles. The conduits and oxygenator fibers extend transversely across the interior of the housing in criss-cross fashion. Cured potting compound and flanges on the interior surfaces of the housing define hermetically sealed heat transfer fluid, blood and gas mixture flow paths. The inlet and outlet ends of the heat exchanger conduits communicate with first and second chambers formed on opposite sides of the housing. The inlet and outlet ends of the oxygenator fibers communicate with third and fourth chambers on the other opposite sides of the housing.

    Abstract: An articulating supporting bracket for a surgical tissue stabilizer comprises a series of elements joined to one another by articulating ball-and-socket joints. A flexible cable extends through passages in the elements, and, when tightened, causes the balls and sockets to lock together frictionally. The ball of each joint fits into its socket by an interference fit, whereby the ball and socket of each joint engage one another over an area of contact when the cable is tightened, thereby providing a strong, rigid support for the tissue stabilizer.

    Abstract: A generally cylindrical membrane-type fiber bundle blood oxygenator concentrically surrounds a generally cylindrical blood heat exchanger including a fiber bundle made of thousands of polymer material micro-conduits. A heat transfer fluid such as water is introduced into the upper end of the heat exchanger and flows downwardly around the outside surfaces of the micro-conduits to an outlet. Upper and lower seals of urethane potting compound separate the heat transfer fluid from the open ends of the micro-conduits through which blood flows. A transition manifold at the upper end of the heat exchanger directs out flowing blood radially outwardly to the upper end of the oxygenator fiber bundle. The blood flows downwardly around the outside surfaces of the fibers of the oxygenator fiber bundle to a blood outlet manifold that collects the oxygenated blood.

    Abstract: A filtered coaxial connector is provided including an insulated housing, a conductive connector shell concentrically surrounding a center conductor, a ferrite cylinder concentrically located around a portion of the conductive shell and a leadless chip capacitor, one contact of which is electrically connected to the conductive shell. A solid metal washer is electrically connected with the second contact of the chip capacitor. When installed in an enclosure, the metal washer is additionally in contact with the enclosure panel, connecting the capacitor between the connector shell and the enclosure panel. Electrically, the ferrite cylinder is connected in series with the capacitor, thus forming an impedance divider. Common-mode noise generated within the enclosure is applied to this impedance divider, and is shunted through the capacitor to the chassis. As such, common-mode noise generated within the enclosure is attenuated before being permitted to spread throughout the network, via an attached coaxial cable.

    Abstract: A hollow fiber oxygenator including a hollow fiber bundle having first and second ends located within an oxygenator chamber. The oxygenator chamber includes a hollow core around which the hollow fibers are spirally wound and includes an outer casing adjacent the fibers. A gas entry port is coupled to the interior of the fibers adjacent the first end of the bundle and a gas outlet is coupled to the interior of the fibers at the second end of the bundle. A blood inlet to the oxygenator chamber, exterior of the fibers, is provided adjacent the second end of the bundle, and a blood outlet from the oxygenator chamber is provided adjacent the first end of the bundle. The resulting structure provides an axial flow oxygenator, in which the direction of blood flow through the oxygenator chamber is opposite the direction of gas flow through the fibers.
