    Abstract: The present invention is directed to contryphan peptides having 6-12 amino acids, preferably including one or more D-tryptophan or D-leucine residues. The peptides of the present invention are generically termed "contryphans," although the D-leucine containing contryphans are sometimes referred to as leu-contryphans. More specifically, the present invention is directed to contryphan peptides having the general formula Xaa.sub.1 -Cys-Xaa.sub.2 -Xaa.sub.3 -Xaa.sub.4 -Pro-Xaa.sub.5 -Cys (SEQ ID NO:1), wherein Xaa.sub.1, is any amino acid or des-Xaa.sub.1, Xaa.sub.2 is Pro, 4-trans-hydroxyproline or Val, Xaa.sub.3 is D-Trp, L-Trp, D-Leu or L-Leu, preferably D-Trp or D-Leu, Xaa.sub.4 is any amino acid and Xaa.sub.5 is Trp or Tyr. When the peptide contains Xaa.sub.1, it is preferably Gly, Glu, or Lys, most preferably Gly. When Xaa.sub.3 is D- or L-Trp, Xaa.sub.2 is preferably Pro or 4-trans-hydroxyproline. When Xaa.sub.3 is D- or L-Leu, Xaa.sub.2 is preferably Val.

    Abstract: A warning device to warn drivers of two wheeled vehicles of an approaching critical angle is disclosed. The warning device may include a sensing device and a separate signaling device. The sensing device may be a pendulum, bubble within a tube of fluid, a proximity sensor, or a mechanical whisker. The signaling device may be a buzzer, beeper, or lighted bulb. The sensing device sends a signal to the signaling device when a predetermined angle, greater than the critical angle, is reached so that the operator has time to react to the information prior to the vehicle tipping or contacting the ground. The warning device may be attachable to a bar of the vehicle or placed atop the vehicle and Is preferably easily installed by the motorcycle owner/driver. A method for warning a driver is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A golf putter with a face of light weight construction, such as aluminum, and perimeter, heel-toe, weights, such as brass, attached above the striking area of the putter face on stilts that extend upward on the heel and toe of the putter face. The weights constitute the majority of the weight of the putter head. Slots in the stilts through which the weights are attached make the height of the center of gravity of the putter adjustable. When a ball is stroked with the putter with an ascending blow, to diminish the effect of the loft, the friction with the ball and the putter face allows the vertically high moment of inertia to impart overspin to the ball because the putter head rotates as such slightly at the moment of impact. When a ball is stroked with the putter with a descending blow, the putter head rotates slightly causing the friction of impact to break which allows the balls contact and friction with the putting green to have a greater effect on how the ball starts rolling.

    Abstract: A rock crusher such as a cone or jaw crusher incorporates hardened tapered inserts in the manganese or other wear liner of at least one of its crushing elements. The inserts extend outwardly from the crushing surface of the crushing element towards the facing crushing surface so as, in use, to act as pick axes that shatter rock primarily by impact rather than pulverizing the rock by compression. The inserts are fixed in a heat treated manganese wear liner either by bonding or by press-fitting. The inserts substantially improve the life of the wear liner and, unexpectedly, 1) produce product of a highly uniform gradation in the desired ranges, 2) consistently produce product with a very high cubicity, 3) dramatically reduce the crusher's power requirements, and 4) significantly increase the crusher's capacity.

    Abstract: An apparatus for measuring ion concentration of a solution includes an ion sensitive field effect transistor (ISFET), a reference device, an ISFET control circuit, a memory, a measurement circuit and a diagnostic circuit. The ISFET has a drain, a source, an ion sensitive gate region and a plurality of device characteristics. The reference device is separated from the gate region by a sample solution. The ISFET control circuit is coupled to the ISFET and operates the ISFET at a drain-source voltage V.sub.DS and at n successive drain currents I.sub.Di and corresponding gate-source voltages V.sub.GSi, wherein i is an integer from 1 to n and n is an integer greater than 1. The memory stores the plurality of device characteristics and the n successive drain currents I.sub.Di and gate-source voltages V.sub.GSi. The measurement circuit measures ion concentration of the solution as a function of at least one of the n successive drain currents I.sub.Di and gate-source voltages V.sub.

    Abstract: A computer architecture that includes a high speed, low pin bus that directly couples a microprocessor to the physical memory of the processor. Physical memory typically has a number of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) devices. The bus is a byte wide and has a data rate of approximately 500 Mbytes/sec. The high speed bus may be coupled with a conventional bus, so that conventional devices can communicate with the processor using existing bus protocols. The present invention includes a processor interface that allows the processor to communicate using the protocol of either bus. The interface also allows communication between devices on either bus. Also included is a system that incorporates cache memory on a high speed memory bus and a method for allowing I/O devices to be placed on both a conventional bus and the separate high speed bus.

    Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a method and apparatus for remotely sensing electrical activity and potential for lightning occurrence. The disclosure is particularly directed to the use of such an apparatus and method to detect the electrical alignment of particles in upper levels of electrified storms. Storms are illuminated by radar in one or more orthogonal polarizations and the co-polar and cross-polar returns are correlated coherently and incoherently. The correlation coefficient, or a function thereof, is examined to determine the degree of particle alignment, and therefore the degree of electrification and potential for lightning occurrence. The phase of the correlation computation, in coherent processing, also detects particle alignment, which can be incorporated in the predictive decision. Correlation and phase can be displayed, recorded or, utilized for a prediction or warning.

    Abstract: An improved alcohol-free method for fractionating gluten into gliadin and glutenin fractions is provided where an acidic dispersion of gluten is formed with a reducing agent (e.g., sodium metabisulfite) operable for breaking disulfide bonds in the gluten protein. Thereafter, the pH of the dispersion is raised to cause glutenin to precipitate while leaving gliadin suspended in the dispersion. The respective fractions can then be separated by decanting or centrifugation. In preferred processing, the dispersion is reacidified prior to separation in order to achieve a higher degree of separation of the glutenin and gliadin.

The composition is a dye reactive oxidizer carrying gel and the method of use is to silkscreen onto the fabric to be decorated with the oxidizing gel. The gel is allowed to react with the dye of the fabric in a pattern dictated by the silkscreening pattern. The oxidizing agent is then removed from the fabric.

The composition contains an oxidizer mixed with a gel or a thickening agent to form a liquid/solid colloidal suspension. Tumbling the composition with the spreaders allows the composition to be spread randomly over the garments to give them a faded or worn look.

    Abstract: A fast parasitic-insensitive continuous-time filter and equalizer integrated circuit that uses an active integrator is described. Circuit techniques for excess-phase cancellation, and for setting the corner-frequency of the filter and equalizer are also described. These techniques result in a filter and equalizer chip with performance independent of process, supply, and temperature without employing phase-lock loops. This 20MHz 6th order Bessel filter and 2nd order equalizer operate from 5V, and generate only 0.24% (-52dB) of total harmonic distortion when processing 2Vp-p differential output signals. The device is optimized to limit high-frequency noise and to amplitude equalize the data pulses in hard disk read-channel systems. The device supports data rates of up to 36Mbps, and is built in a 1.5 .mu./4GHz BiCMOS technology.

    Abstract: The invention is the construction of a portable telephone made short enough and flat enough to be conveniently carried upon the person, yet allowing it to be quickly reconfigured into a form that is long enough and contoured enough to be effective and natural to use. The telephone chassis includes a pair of chassis sections which are interconnected by a pivot connection about which the chassis sections are rotated between open or closed positions. The pivot connection defines a pivot axis and a plane of rotation which are oriented in angulated relation with both chassis sections so that the chassis sections define a compact configuration when closed and an ergonomic configuration when rotated to the open position. A manually releasable spring urged locking mechanism is provided to lock the chassis sections against relative rotation at both the open and closed positions.
