Abstract: A device adapted to be used in conjunction with conventional pipe tongs for rapid make up of drill pipe joints. The device is pneumatically driven, and utilizes a flexible belt to engage a section of drill pipe and to spin the same until substantial resistance to further spinning is experienced. This resistance occurs when the pipe joint is reasonably tight, at which time the make up device automatically cocks the associated pipe tongs. The device includes a belt and pneumatically actuated pivot arm arrangement whereby drill pipe of varying sizes can be effectively handled, and whereby the drill pipe is held in operative association with the belt through the application of minimum holding force.
