Abstract: A 3D/2D imaging system and method analyzes various anatomical structures, such as the organs and/or vascular structures within the imaged anatomy through which the interventional device can pass to reach the target tissue. The imaging system can determine the locations, characteristics, and configurations of the vascular structures/blood vessels and/or organs. During the performance of the interventional procedure, the information provided by the imaging system from the 3D volume can be employed to optimally position the intra-operative imaging device in order to obtain a desired visualization e.g., 2D view, of the position of the interventional device within the patient anatomy. This intra-operative 2D view is optionally registered to the 3D volume and can be displayed by the imaging system along with a 3D model or image determined from the 3D volume that is representative of the patient anatomy present in the intra-operative 2D image.
