  • Patent number: 5607902
Abstract: Swelling and migration of subterranean clay is inhibited during drilling for and stimulation of the production of hydrocarbon fluids, and preparation therefor, by treating said formations with a copolymer of about 5% to about 50% of an anionic monomer such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid and the balance a cationic monomer selected from dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride, or acryloxy or methacryloxy ethyl, propyl or 3-methyl butyl trimethyl ammonium chlorides or methosulfates. Permeability damage to the formation is reduced in the presence of the copolymer; it is particularly effective in spite of the presence of a foaming agent.

  • Patent number: 5598917
Abstract: Disclosed is an electrical contact assembly wherein a conductive contact member for electrically coupling two conductive surfaces also serves as part of a detent assembly. The electrical contact assembly has a contact member resiliently supported by a carrier, wherein the carrier controllably guides the contact member along a path. A feature of the electrical contact assembly is a detent bump disposed at a location along the contact member's path, wherein upon contact between the contact member and the detent bump, the detent bump provides resistance to relative movement between the carrier and the conductive surfaces, thereby producing "detent feel.

  • Patent number: 5595434
Abstract: A flashlight wand attachment including a wand member having a truncated generally conical portion and an opposing member. The attachment also includes threads for fastening the wand member to the opposing member when the wand member is disposed at one end of a wide portion or lamp housing of a handle member or flashlight, and the opposing member is disposed at an opposite end of the wide portion or lamp housing. Fastening the wand member to the opposing member in this way operably connects the wand attachment to the handle member. The present invention also includes a method of attaching a wand attachment to a flashlight.

  • Patent number: 5591701
Abstract: In the removal of particulates from a wellbore, such as in air drilling for hydrocarbon recovery, a mixture of an amphoteric foaming agent and, typically, an anionic surfactant is employed. An aqueous solution thereof having a pH of at least 9.5 is used to generate a foam for removing the particulates; then the foam is collapsed by the introduction of acid to reduce the pH below about 4, the particles are removed mechanically, the pH is restored to greater than 9.5, and the foaming solution is returned to the wellbore. The solution may be used several times; partial losses of foaming agent in the process may be easily replenished with each cycle. Cationic surfactants may be used instead of anionic, with foaming and foam collapse being controlled at opposite pH's. Savings are realized in water, drilling chemicals, and settling pits and the like for removing particulates from the foam.

  • Patent number: 5588034
Abstract: An apparatus for inspecting single crystal specimens comprises an x-ray generator which supplies x-rays to a collimator. The collimator has a matrix of apertures to produce a plurality of parallel x-ray beams which are directed onto a surface of the specimen. An x-ray detector detects the x-ray beams diffracted from the surface of the specimen, corresponding to each of the parallel x-ray beams. At each symmetry pole of an overall Laue pattern an accurately predictable pattern of spots is produced on the x-ray detector, if the orientation and shape of the specimen crystal is known. Each spot corresponds to where one of the diffracted beams strikes the detector. A disarrangement of one or more of the spots indicates a difference in crystal orientation.
