  • Publication number: 20070093894
Abstract: This invention relates to a method for coating a medical device comprising the steps of applying to at least a portion of the surface of the medical device, a bactericidal coating layer, wherein the bactericidal coating layer comprises a bactericidal agent; and applying to at least a portion of the surface of the medical device, a bacteriostatic coating, wherein the bacteriostatic coating layer comprises a bacteriostatic agent wherein the combination of the bactericidal and bacteriostatic agents are in an effective concentration to inhibit growth of microbial organisms relative to an uncoated medical device. The two antimicrobial agents are used to develop a kit comprising these compositions in one container or in separate containers. The kit is used to coat or flush medical devices prior to or after implantation in a mammal.

  • Publication number: 20060246208
Abstract: A non-metallic medical device treated with a antimicrobial agents is provided. Different combinations of antimicrobial agents can be used for different types of non-metallic medical devices depending on the types of infections related to each device. The combination of different antimicrobial substances has a synergistic effect against certain bacteria and fungi. An antimicrobial agent can be used to treat a non-metallic medical device by mixing the antimicrobial agent with an acid solution and glycerol and exposing the non-metallic medical device to the resulting mixture such that an enough of the antimicrobial agent binds to a portion of the non-metallic medical device to inhibit the growth of bacterial and fungal organisms.

  • Publication number: 20050271694
Abstract: The incorporation of one or more therapeutic agents on metallic and non-metallic medical prostheses is provided. The therapeutic agent can be used, for example, to prevent, treat, or reduce bacterial and fungal infections associated with these implants. Additionally, the therapeutic agents can be used to effect other therapeutic benefits. Specifically, a bilayer therapeutic coating is applied in two steps. Additionally, non-antimicrobial therapeutic agents may be incorporated in this coating to treat, prevent, modify, or stimulate certain clinical bioactivities.
