Abstract: A diagnostic control methodology provides reduced disruption of device operation when performing diagnostics on devices within a computer system. A diagnostic application notifies a device driver that controls a particular device that diagnostics should be performed during a period of low activity on the device. In response to receiving the notification, the device driver waits for a time of low activity and either notifies the application to unload the device driver and load a diagnostic device driver, or enters a diagnostic mode directly if such operation is supported by the functional device driver. A timeout duration can be specified, and may be set by the notification, so that the diagnostics will be performed within the timeout period even if a time of low activity has not occurred by the expiration of the timeout.

Abstract: A plurality of data packets encoded according to a first protocol are received which encapsulate data encoded according to a second protocol. A first source address is extracted from the packets according to the first protocol, it is determined whether or not the first source address is a substantial duplicate of a known assigned address. If it is a duplicate, a second source address is extracted from the encapsulated data according to the second protocol, and the first source address and said second source address are provided in an enhanced error log so that a system administrator may correct the duplicate assigned address. Enhanced embodiments of the invention included analysis of data encapsulated by a third, fourth and subsequent protocols, and automatic determination of each protocol encoding format.

Abstract: A system and method for managing parallel SCSI device functionality is presented. A user sends a request to a vendor whereby the request corresponds to the user changing the functionality of one of the user's SCSI devices. The vendor generates and sends a key that includes a password and a functionality value to the user. The user extracts the password, extracts the functionality value, and includes them in a command descriptor block. The user includes the command descriptor block in a SCSI command, and sends the SCSI command to the user's SCSI device whereupon the SCSI device validates the password and reconfigures itself based upon the functionality value. The SCSI device returns a message to the user indicating whether the reconfiguring process was successful. In turn, the user forwards the message to the vendor so the vendor may bill the user accordingly.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for tracing troubleshooting events for aiding technical assistance personnel are provided. With the method and apparatus, a user initiates a technical assistance tracing mechanism on his/her client device. The technical assistance tracing mechanism includes event listeners that are registered with the operating system of the client device. These event listeners are notified when, for example, an input device event occurs, when a graphical user interface event occurs, and the like. These events are recorded by the technical assistance tracing mechanism of the present invention as a log of events. This log of events may then be provided to a computing device which is being used by the technical assistance specialist for use in diagnosing and curing the problems encountered by the user. An automated tool may be provided for analyzing the event log and/or emulating an operating system environment so that the event log may be replayed in a graphical manner.

Abstract: An improved system and method for users to communicate with one another via electronic messaging. An email message having one or more inquiries/questions or other type of solicitation is sent from an originator, and directed to one or more recipients. Upon receipt, the email message is opened by the recipient(s). The email message has an action button or similar indicator adjacent to an inquiry/question in the received email, the action button indicating that a response is being solicited by the originator. The recipient mouse clicks or otherwise selects the action button, which causes a template to be displayed in the same window as the received email. The recipient is thus able to quickly and easily provide a response in this template, and then send the response to the originator.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus is presented for preventing an adapter card that has been reset from issuing spurious error signals due to the fact it is not synchronized with the system at the time it comes out of reset. To prevent spurious errors, the data processing issues a command to the adapter card that is to be reset that disables error checking before the reset command is sent. The reset command is sent next. After the adapter card completes the reset operation, it notifies the system that the reset is completed. The adapter card waits until it receives a command from the system to re-enable error checking before it turns back on error checking. In this manner, the system can insure that error checking is only turned back on synchronously with other system activities so that spurious error signals are not generated.

Abstract: The present invention provides a portable SCSI bus analyzer (PSBA) that is less bulky and less expensive than the known prior art systems. The PSBA provides a portable device that may be connected to a SCSI port of a computing system and may act as a target or initiator on the SCSI bus. The PSBA gathers trace data of data transactions occurring over the SCSI bus and stores them either in a storage device of the computing system or, in a preferred embodiment, on a removable memory card inserted into a memory card interface of the PSBA. The PSBA gathers the trace data for a predetermined period of time. At the end of the trace, or test, the PSBA may be removed from the computing system and transported to another location where an analysis device is provided with the trace data. The analysis device analyzes the trace data in order to determine potential sources of error in the operation of the computing system.

Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided whereby a monitor module on a token ring network assigns an active monitor and then activates a transmitting module resident on each station on the network to transmit test data frames of varying lengths which have been tuned to encourage maximum phase jitter on the network. Phase jitter related errors are then observed with a dedicated commercially available test apparatus or program.
