  • Publication number: 20180124597
Abstract: This disclosure relates to techniques for performing Wi-Fi authentication in a wireless communication system. Public key cryptography may be used to enhance the confidentiality of the user's permanent identity in transit. In some embodiments, a RSA-OAEP (SHA-256) encryption scheme may be used to protect the permanent identity when the EAP client needs to send the user's permanent identity to the server in the absence of pseudonym or fast re-authentication identity. In some embodiments, a server certificate is used to authenticate a iWLAN tunnel to protect an IMSI during setup of a Wi-Fi call. Using the methods described herein on both or either of the EAP client and server side may offer improved privacy protection.

  • Patent number: 9949113
Abstract: Techniques to manage updates for eSIMs of a secondary wireless device are disclosed. Responsive to a user input, expiration of a timer, receipt of a message from an associated primary wireless device, processing circuitry of the secondary wireless device commands an eUICC to update an eSIM. A secure data connection is established between the eUICC and a network provisioning server, either directly from the secondary wireless device to a cellular wireless network or relayed indirectly via the primary wireless device. The eUICC and the network provisioning server exchange messages in accordance with a BIP process to update the eSIM. The eUICC provides a status to the processing circuitry indicating success or failure for the eSIM update. Upon success, a portion of the secondary wireless device may be placed in a reduced power state. Upon failure, the eSIM update process may repeat up to a maximum number of retries.

  • Publication number: 20180098178
Abstract: Some embodiments relate to methods for provisioning a secondary wireless device with an eSIM for wireless communication and activating multi-SIM functionality between the secondary wireless device and a primary wireless device having a subscribed SIM. The primary wireless device may act as a proxy in obtaining the eSIM for the secondary wireless device. The primary wireless device may then provide, to the cellular network, identifiers of the SIMs of the primary and secondary wireless devices. The primary wireless device may then request initiation of multi-SIM functionality for the two SIMs, and receive an indication that the multi-SIM functionality has been initiated. As an example, the multi-SIM functionality may be implemented by mapping the SIM of the primary wireless device and the SIM of the secondary wireless device (e.g., the provisioned eSIM) to the same Mobile Directory Number (MDN).

  • Publication number: 20170359829
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) device may communicate according to a new device category satisfying specified QoS (quality of service) requirements while also satisfying specified link budget requirements, and additional optimization requirements. The new device category may identify the UE device as a wearable device. According to some embodiments, LTE category M may be extended to support non-MTC operations performed by wearable devices. For example, the new device category may support UE mobility and may disallow access barring. Additional extensions may be implemented in response to an indication by the UE that the UE is implementing a specific application, such as VoLTE or a near real-time application, such as audio streaming. In some scenarios, the indication may include the UE indicating a specific QCI value. In some scenarios, the indication may include the UE attaching to a specific APN.

  • Publication number: 20170347278
Abstract: System and methods for providing special radio provisions to link budget limited devices. Before establishing a cellular connection with a cellular network, a user equipment device (UE), such as a link budget limited UE, may negotiate the special radio provisions with the network by presenting requested profile information to the network, and receiving back approved profile information from the network. The UE may perform these communications either directly, via a non-cellular communication connection with the network, or indirectly, via a companion or proxy device. When the UE initiates a cellular connection with the network, both entities may use information specified in the approved profile information, which may improve efficiency of the connection. In some scenarios, the approved profile information may identify a class of devices to which the UE belongs. The approved profile information may also be used in establishing connections with other devices of the same class.

  • Patent number: 9832686
Abstract: Mobile devices, base stations, and/or relay stations may implement CSFB (circuit switched fallback) operations by using RRC (radio resource control) connection release and/or handover procedures. If the CSFB RAT (radio access technology) target is not well configured, the UE may be informed and provisioned by the NW during a CSFB procedure with the information to return to LTE. Having this information, the UE may perform an autonomous search of LTE cells after the CSFB call release, speeding up return to LTE. To minimize potential call failures during CSFB, the UE may autonomously perform an additional cell search, in particular a search for cells on a RAT different from the initial target RAT. This creates an opportunity to prevent call failure of CSFB calls that would otherwise fail. The UE may be provisioned during the CSFB procedure with information to perform the additional cell search, should such a search be necessary.

  • Publication number: 20170332416
Abstract: Apparatus and methods to support emergency services sessions by network elements and by a wireless device are disclosed. The wireless device, when roaming to a visited country/region, queries a network-based server to obtain information for Public Land Mobile Networks (PLMNs) that support emergency services sessions via non-cellular wireless access in the visited country/region. The network-based server responds with a list of PLMNs from which the wireless device selects a PLMN. The wireless device further queries the network-based server to obtain information for evolved Packet Data Gateways (ePDGs) for a selected PLMN and receives from the network-based server a list of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for ePDGs that support emergency services sessions via non-cellular wireless access for the selected PLMN.

  • Publication number: 20170325123
Abstract: In some embodiments, a wireless device such as a user equipment (UE) may communicate with a base station using an advanced form of carrier aggregation. The UE may provide signaling to the network specifying a number P of downlink component carriers to be configured for use by the UE for downlink carrier aggregation and a number Q of uplink component carriers to be configured for use by the UE for uplink carrier aggregation. The UE can only utilize a lesser number M of downlink component carriers at any given time in downlink carrier aggregation and can only utilize a lesser number N of uplink component carriers at any given time in uplink carrier aggregation. Thus the UE may request the network to configure a greater number P and Q of downlink and uplink component carriers, respectively, than the UE can actually use at any instant of time.

  • Publication number: 20170289883
Abstract: Apparatus and methods to support handover of emergency services sessions by network elements and by a wireless device between wireless networks are disclosed. The wireless device indicates an emergency services handover to applicable network elements, including an evolved Packet Data Gateway (ePDG), in one more messages when transferring an established emergency services session from a cellular wireless network to an untrusted non-cellular wireless network. In some embodiments, the wireless device includes a predefined string as part of a set of identification data in an IKE_AUTH request message sent to the ePDG. In some embodiments, the wireless device includes a previously allocated IP address within a payload of the IKE_AUTH request message to indicate handover of an existing session. By providing both the predefined “EMERGENCY” string and the previously allocated IP address, the wireless indicates a handover of an emergency services session between wireless networks.

  • Publication number: 20170280422
Abstract: A wireless communication device (UE) conducting wireless communications according to a specified radio access technology (RAT) in a first communications band belonging to a first network may be required to switch to a different communications band due to network restrictions and/or radio link failure. The UE may therefore perform a system scan identifying other communications bands associated with the first RAT and available at the present location of the UE. The UE may identify whether the other communications bands include preferred communications bands belonging to the first network, support a service associated with the wireless communications of the UE, and have an energy level higher than a specified threshold. If one or more preferred communications bands are present, the UE may switch communications from the first communications band to one of the preferred communications bands, even if it doesn't have the highest energy level among all the other communications bands.
