Abstract: A method and system for dynamic backup policy handshaking. Specifically, the method and system disclosed herein entail optimizing storage space utilization for backup, archiving, and/or disaster recovery-purposed data storage. That is, based on time projections until the data storage reaches capacity, the utilization of the remaining storage space may be optimized without compromising data protection in order to prolong the use of the data storage. In prolonging the utilization of the data storage, tiered data backup policies may be adjusted.

Abstract: A data storage for storing client data includes a persistent storage and a storage manager. The persistent storage stores a deduplicated client data repository. The storage manager generates a time series of the deduplicated client data repository; predicts a future available storage capacity of the deduplicated client data repository using a two factor higher order fuzzy time forecasting module, and the time series; makes a determination that a storage failure of the deduplicated client data repository will occur based on the future available storage capacity; and performs a remediation of the storage failure in response to the determination.
