  • Patent number: 6474404
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling the temperature of a melt (10), preferably of a steel melt, in a distributing vessel (11), whereby the temperature of the melt is measured, the measured result is compared with a predetermined temperature range in the form of specified values, and as much heat is supplied or withdrawn from the melt such that the temperature remains inside said range. In order to control the melt temperature, a fireproof shaped part (20) which is closed on both sides and which is provided for accommodating a liquid cooled induction coil (1) is immersed in the melt (10). The transmission of heat is carried out by means of thermal conduction out of the wall of the shaped part (20) which is coupled to the induced electromagnetic field and/or by means of a direct coupling to the liquid melt (10).

  • Patent number: 6279915
Abstract: A tubular refractory channel (2) that can be inserted as a flowthrough for liquid metal into a thermally insulating outer lining (10) and can be connected with the outer lining (10) by a refractory mortar layer (9). In order to prevent liquid metal from penetrating into the mortar layer (9), even if the mortar layer contracts, the outer lining (10) overlaps the metal inflow-side of a front face (4) of the channel (2).

  • Patent number: 6217825
Abstract: In a process for splashing and/or teeming liquid metal, in particular steel, through a discharge in the wall or in the bottom of a metallurgical vessel, the discharge is electromagnetically coupled to the electromagnetic field of at least one fluid-cooled, in particular air-cooled, inductor. The inductor and the discharge are at least partially disposed in the wall or in the bottom of the metallurgical vessel. For teeming, the electromagnetic field of the inductor, or of the inductors, is coupled directly to the discharge and also the liquid metal. For this purpose, the frequency of the electromagnetic field or the electromagnetic fields, if appropriate, is adjusted correspondingly.

  • Patent number: 6210629
Abstract: The invention pertains to a process and an apparatus for the discontinuous tapping of melts. An inductor surrounds a passage through which the melt is discharged from a vessel. The inductor applies radial electromagnetic energy to the passage to maintain the melt in a molten state. To stop flow of the melt through the passage, an outlet opening of the passage is closed and the inductor is electrically switched off while a cooling medium is flowed through the inductor. To begin flow of the melt, the outlet opening of the passage is opened and the inductor is electrically switched on.

  • Patent number: 6156446
Abstract: The invention relates to a one-part, fire resistant ceramic composite structure consisting of at least two adjacent layers. The substantial mass portion of the layers consists of an identical, fire-resistant ceramic material, and the remaining mass portion is selected in relation to each layer in such a manner that at least one layer couples inductively subject to the influence of a magnetic field, whereas at least one other layer does not couple subject to the influence of said electromagnetic field. However, all layers have the same thermal coefficient of expansion.

  • Patent number: 5542466
Abstract: A method of casting molten material into a strip-shaped product having substantially intended final dimensions that first supplies molten material into the interior of a vessel having a casting nozzle connected thereto. The nozzle is formed of a refractory ceramic material and has a passage extending therethrough from an inlet opening connected directly to the interior of the vessel to an outlet opening. The nozzle is oriented relative to the vessel so that the outlet opening is positioned at a location higher than the inlet opening. Molten material passes from the vessel interior directly through the inlet opening and into the passage until an upper level of molten material in the passage is the same as an upper level of molten material in the vessel interior and below the outlet opening. Solidification of the molten material is commenced in the passage, thereby forming solidifying material.

  • Patent number: 5223157
Abstract: A regulating device for regulating the flow of molten metal from metallurgical vessel includes an inner tubular part which is fixed to the metallurgical vessel and defines at least one through-hole, and a movable outer tubular part rotatably and/or slidably mounted to the metallurgical vessel and extending around the tubular inner part. The tubular outer part terminates at a bottom edge constituted by a contiguous land extending around the tubular inner part. The tubular outer part can be slid and/or rotated between open and closed positions at which the through-hole of the tubular inner part is opened and closed, respectively. To prevent plugs of molten metal from hardening in the at least one through-hole of the tubular inner part, the bottom edge of the tubular outer part is designed so that a portion of the land thereof passes across the at least one through-hole when the tubular outer part is moved between the open and closed position.
