  • Patent number: 5336470
Abstract: The invention relates to a chemical oxygen generator having a chemical charge arranged within a housing. This chemical charge is brought to an exothermal oxygen-releasing reaction by an ignition device with the reaction running through the chemical charge in the form of a reaction front defining a surface and starting from the ignition-end wall of the housing. The oxygen generator has at least one reaction-control member arranged within the chemical charge. In one embodiment, the reaction-control member is disposed transversely to the direction of movement of the reaction front and overlaps a part of the surface of the reaction front. In another embodiment, the reaction-control member extends parallelly to the direction of movement of the reaction front. The oxygen generator of the invention is improved in that the oxygen flow and the duration of supply can be influenced beyond that obtained with a purely geometric extension of the reaction path.

A generator of this kind is improved in that the oxygen flow and the supply duration can be influenced by the material and/or the shape of the reaction-control member. The improvement is achieved in that one or more reaction-control members made of sheet metal are arranged parallel to the direction of movement of the reaction front. As an alternative, the reaction-control member can be configured in the form of a spiral conveyor which is made of sheet metal or a thermally-insulating material.

  • Patent number: 4981655
Abstract: A chemical oxygen generator has a chemical mixture based on an alkali-metal chlorate (NaClO.sub.3) which constitutes the charge of a cartridge having an ignition device and an oxygen outlet. This oxygen generator is improved so that the charge is insensitive to shock and so that it can be configured in any desired outer form and size and that an advancing reaction zone is assured without a further assisting device. The charge includes a tight bed of chemical pellets which lie one against the other to form the smallest possible contact surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4822572
Abstract: A chemical oxygen generator for use in respirators and resuscitators for providing an oxygen reserve includes oxygen in chemically bound compacts or oxygen single-candles and the oxygen is released when needed in the course of a chemical reaction. The oxygen single candles are fitted together axially in a canister in modular construction with incandescence elements therebetween. In the cover of the canister, opposite the upper end wall of the first single candle, there is an igniting device, and in the bottom, an outlet opening for the escape of the released oxygen. As soon as the first oxygen single-candle is activated by means of the igniting device, the oxygen reaction sets in and a reaction front moves in the direction of the next single candle. The reaction transmission to the next single candle occurs through the intermediate incandescence element.

  • Patent number: 4731197
Abstract: A pellet of potassium superoxide, as the oxygen-yielding chemical, with an additive of catalyst material for stimulating the release of oxygen is improved by providing a concentrated addition of the catalyst material on the surface of the pellet; this permits a uniform release of oxygen during the entire period of the use of the pellet. With the pellet, oxygen is split off as required at the very outset of breathing with the breathing apparatus and a release of oxygen in excess of demand as use continues is avoided. A pellet of this type includes a compressed core body containing substantially potassium superoxide and surrounded by a compressed jacket made of highly catalyzed potassium superoxide material.

  • Patent number: 4591399
Abstract: An igniting mixture is provided for chemical oxygen generators used in respirators and resuscitators for making an oxygen supply available. In chemical oxygen generators the oxygen is present in chemically bound form and when needed is released in the course of a chemical reaction with the triggering of an ignition. The ignition device with an igniting mixture is normally contained in the upper part of the chemical oxygen supply present in candle form. From here, then, begins the reaction after the ignition. To ensure the storability of the oxygen generators, the igniting mixture remains thermally stable up to a temperature of 100.degree. C., but can be activated by water and also by a higher temperature. The igniting composition consists of a mixture of an alkali and metal oxygen compound selectively with an oxygen containing silicon compound, percarbonate, metal peroxide or superoxide.
