  • Patent number: 10926729
Abstract: A hollow article such as an active bolster for an automobile is formed of an injection molded panel having a ridge and furrow adjacent a panel perimeter and an injection molded sheet having a bonding section at a sheet outer periphery, wherein the bonding section is within the furrow. An injection molded bond is formed between the bonding section and furrow, wherein a compression area where the sheet overlies a region of the panel adjacent the furrow is configured to constrain the bond to the furrow. An associated process and system facilitates mold alignment, part alignment, material strength, design adaptability, efficient processing, reduced labor, increased production rates, reduced energy consumption per part, aesthetically pleasing surfaces, and reduces or eliminates the need for a separate welding operation.

  • Patent number: 10456970
Abstract: An armrest for a captain's chair of a vehicle includes an outer layer and an inner layer including a foaming agent and defining a hollow core. At least one of the inner layer and the outer layer may include a reinforcing material and/or may be varied in thickness along its length. The armrest may include a third layer defining the hollow core. A related method includes heating a parison having a first and second layers, mixing a foaming agent into the second layer prior to heating, feeding the heated parison between mold halves, clamping the heated parison by moving the mold halves together, and pushing the layers of the heated parison outward, using blown air, such that the first layer is adjacent the mold and the second layer forms a hollow core of the armrest, the hollow core being partially filled by expansion of the second layer during cooling.

  • Patent number: 10351094
Abstract: An apparatus includes a main body substantially enclosing an interior volume. The main body is elastically expandable to an inflated configuration. The apparatus further includes a vent aperture in the main body and a vent cover at least partially overlapping the vent aperture. The vent aperture and the vent cover define a passage from the interior volume to outside of the main body. In the inflated configuration of the main body and within a pressure threshold of the interior volume, the vent cover constricts the passage proportionately to a pressure increase in the interior volume of the main body.

  • Patent number: 10131283
Abstract: A storage compartment for a vehicle glove box includes at least one bumper stop defined by a resilient tab disposed on a storage compartment sidewall, the resilient tab including a cam face, a stop face, and a finger tab accessible from an interior of the storage compartment. The cam face may define an arcuate configuration. The stop face is carried by the finger tab whereby a deflecting force applied to the finger tab deflects the stop face from a retaining position to a releasing position. The storage compartment sidewall defines an aperture disposed to provide access to the finger tab from an interior of the storage compartment. Vehicle glove boxes including the described storage compartment are provided.

  • Patent number: 10066431
Abstract: A damper for a storage compartment closure includes a bellows chamber and damper air passage structures each configured to provide an air volume intake during a bellows chamber extension that is less than an air volume expulsion during a bellows chamber compression. One damper air venting structure is a valve having a translatable lid including an aperture defined therethrough. A bellows chamber air pressure differential maintains the translatable lid in a closed configuration during the bellows chamber extension and in an open configuration during the bellows chamber compression. Another damper air venting structure is at least one bellows chamber vent including a cover configured whereby a bellows chamber extension incrementally transitions the cover to a closed configuration.

  • Patent number: 9810003
Abstract: An impact resistant releasable retainer is for a door, such as for covering a glove box or other vehicle storage compartment. A pawl retains the door closed and releases to allow the door to open. A pivotally mounted catch engages the pawl, such as within a notch, when the door is closed or moved in a forward direction, opposite the opening direction. An actuator moves the catch allowing the pawl to move, such as by engagement with the actuator following the engagement with the catch, for releasing the door to open. The catch otherwise remains secured to the pawl for preventing the inadvertent release of the door, such as during movement in the forward direction as the result of an impact.

  • Patent number: 9789794
Abstract: An active head restraint for a seating assembly of a motor vehicle comprises a structural support for a seatback of the seating assembly, a movable head restraint pad having a stowed position and a deployed position, and a linkage deployment mechanism. The linkage deployment mechanism comprises an upper and lower bar pivotally attached at a forward end to a rear surface of the movable head restraint pad and pivotally attached at a rearward end to an outer tube fixed to an upper portion of the structural support. An inner tube reciprocates within the outer tube. A trigger mechanism is operatively connected with a lower end of the inner tube and urges the inner linkage and an actuating link to a raised deployed position in response to a rear impact event. The actuating link applies an upward force to the lower bar to deploy the movable head restraint pad.

  • Patent number: 9771743
Abstract: A glove box latch system for an automotive vehicle is provided. A glove box door is mounted in an instrument panel housing. The glove box door comprises a movable latch rod and an adjacent lock plate. In the event that the vehicle is involved in a collision, the lock plate engages the latch rod. The engaged lock plate arrests movement of the latch rod, securing the latch rod in the closed position and preventing the glove box door from opening.
