  • Publication number: 20090077156
Abstract: Methods for tracking anomalous behavior in a network referred to as non-zero slack schemes are provided. The non-zero slack schemes reduce the number of communication messages in the network necessary to monitor emerging large-scale, distributed systems using distributed computation algorithms by generating more optimal local constraints for each remote site in the system.

  • Patent number: 7496571
Abstract: Method for performing information-preserving DTD schema embeddings between a source schema when matching a source schema and a target schema. The preservation is realized by a matching process between the two schemas that finds a first string marking of the target schema, evaluates a legality of the first string marking, determines an estimated minimal cost of the first string marking and subsequently adjusts the estimated minimal cost based upon one to one mapping of source schema and target schema subcomponents.

  • Patent number: 7483907
Abstract: A method of estimating an aggregate of a join over data-streams in real-time using skimmed sketches, that only examines each data element once and has a worst case space requirement of O(n2/J), where J is the size of the join and n is the number of data elements. The skimmed sketch is an atomic sketch, formed as the inner product of the data-stream frequency vector and a random binary variable, from which the frequency values that exceed a predetermined threshold have been skimmed off and placed in a dense frequency vector. The join size is estimated as the sum of the sub-joins of skimmed sketches and dense frequency vectors. The atomic sketches may be arranged in a hash structure so that processing a data element only requires updating a single sketch per hash table. This keeps the per-element overhead logarithmic in the domain and stream sizes.

  • Publication number: 20090006346
Abstract: Improved techniques are disclosed for processing data stream queries wherein a data stream is obtained, a set of aggregate queries to be executed on the data stream is obtained, and a query plan for executing the set of aggregate queries on the data stream is generated. In a first method, the generated query plan includes generating at least one intermediate aggregate query, wherein the intermediate aggregate query combines a subset of aggregate queries from the set of aggregate queries so as to pre-aggregate data from the data stream prior to execution of the subset of aggregate queries such that the generated query plan is optimized for computational expense based on a given cost model. In a second method, the generated query plan includes identifying similar filters in two or more aggregate queries of the set of aggregate queries and combining the similar filters into a single filter such that the single filter is usable to pre-filter data input to the two or more aggregate queries.

  • Publication number: 20080175169
Abstract: A method of grouping nodes within a distributed network is provided. The example method includes performing a leader node self determination operation by which each node within the distributed network determines whether to become a leader node or a non-leader node, each leader node being the leader of a group including at least one node. Next, requests are sent, from each leader node, requesting at least one non-leader node to join the group associated with the leader node. First received requests are accepted, at each non-leader node, such that accepting non-leader nodes transition from a non-leader node to a dependent node dependent upon the requesting leader node. A next set of requests are sent, from each remaining non-leader node, requesting to join the group associated with at least one leader node. A determination is made, at each requested leader node, as to whether to accept the non-leader node into the group associated with the requested leader node.

  • Publication number: 20080159316
Abstract: An example embodiment includes determining a cut of a graph to obtain a bi-partite sub-graph, where the graph represents a plurality of nodes and links between the plurality of nodes in a wireless mesh network. A channel is assigned to the bi-partite graph, and the obtained bi-partite subgraph is removed from the graph. The determining, assigning and removing steps are repeated until the graph has been divided into k bipartite subgraphs, where k is the number of channels being used for scheduling.

  • Publication number: 20080059439
Abstract: The invention provides a system and method for translating XPATH queries into SQL queries with a simple least fixpoint (LFP) operator, which is already supported by most commercial RDBMS. The method comprises the steps of (a) rewriting an input query into a regular query, which is capable of capturing both DTD recursion and XPATH queries in a uniform framework; and (b) translating the regular query to an SQL query with LFP. The invention further provides optimization techniques for reducing the use of the LFP operator. As a result, the invention is capable of answering a large class of XPATH queries by means of only low-end RDBMS features already available in most RDBMS.

  • Patent number: 7328220
Abstract: A method of efficiently providing estimated answers to workloads of aggregate, multi-join SQL-like queries over a number of input data-streams. The method only examines each data elements once and uses a limited amount of computer memory. The method uses join graphs and atomic sketches that are essentially pseudo-random summaries formed using random binary variables. The estimated answer is the product of all the atomic sketches for all the vertices in the query join graph. A query workload is processed efficiently by identifying and sharing atomic sketches common to distinct queries, while ensuring that the join graphs remain well formed. The method may automatically minimize either the average query error or the maximum query error over the workload.

  • Patent number: 7194271
Abstract: Channels are allocated to one or more cells within a wireless LAN (WLAN) without causing unacceptable interference. The allocation involves dividing an allocation time period into frames, each frame having a substantially short duration, and then allocating one or more channels to one or more WLAN cells during each such frame according to an allocation vector. The vector assures that each cell allocated a channel is sufficiently distant from every other cell allocated the same channel to minimize cross interference. Only those cells allocated a channel are allowed to transmit during a given frame. The allocation vectors are determined in such a way that the performance of a WLAN is optimized.

  • Publication number: 20060155743
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for identifying constraint violation repairs in data that is comprised of a plurality of records, where each record has a plurality of cells. A database is processed, based on a plurality of constraints that data in the database must satisfy. At least one constraint violation to be resolved is identified based on a cost of repair and the corresponding records to be resolved and equivalent cells are identified in the data that violate the identified at least one constraint violation. A value for each of the equivalent cells can optionally be determined, and the determined value can be assigned to each of the equivalent cells. The at least one constraint violation selected for resolution may be, for example, the constraint violation with a lowest cost. The cost of repairing a constraint is based on a distance metric between the attributes values.
