  • Patent number: 7043088
Abstract: A method is disclosed for decoding multiple-coded symbols from a coded input symbol stream in a single clock cycle. The method constructs an original Huffman look-up table by extending the associated Huffman tree to decode multiple symbols in one clock cycle in a first embodiment and decodes multiple DCT coefficient symbols in an alternate embodiment. An advantage of the method is that the depth of the new Huffman tree is adjustable thereby making the method easily adaptable to various hardware architectures. A further advantage of the present invention is that the decoding process speed is significantly increased while the size of the lookup table is nominally increased.

  • Patent number: 5907363
Abstract: A system and method controls an encoder data buffer. The system includes an encoder for encoding input data as a first bit sequence in a bitstream; a processor having a predetermined size for converting the first bit sequence to a sequence having the predetermined size; and a decoder for decoding the modified bit sequence. The processor generates a set of modified bit sequences for facilitating editing thereof, in which the set of modified bit sequences, assembled in an arbitrary order, are decodeable by the decoder to generate a decoded output signal free of editing artifacts. The modified bit sequences are generated by inserting bits to the first bit sequence. The encoder encodes the input data at a rate such that a final capacity of the data buffer is less than a function of the predetermined size, a desired decoding rate, and an initial capacity of the encoder buffer. The data buffer has a total buffer capacity which is less than a function of the actual rate and the desired decoding rate.

  • Patent number: 5734419
Abstract: A video encoder control system and method are disclosed for controlling a video encoder using a processor having a multiple field delay circuit for delaying input video data by a predetermined number of frames, and a statistics generator for generating statistics from the video data to control the encoder. The statistics generator calculates a sum of absolute values of field differences between pixels, with the sum used for detecting a redundant field, for generating a film flag, and for controlling the encoder using the film flag. The statistics generator calculates averages of blocks of pixels, and a fade detector uses the averages for detecting fades between successive frames to generate a fade flag to control the encoding. The rate controller responds to the statistics to change the resolution of the encoding of successive frames. The processor outputs the film flags, scene change flags, and fade flags to the rate controller to control the encoding of the delayed video data.

  • Patent number: 5488674
Abstract: A method for fusing two or more source images to form a composite image with extended information content which may be color augmented and apparatus for forming the composite image from the source images is disclosed. Each source image is decomposed into a number of source images of varying resolution. The decomposed source images are analyzed using directionally sensitive operators to generate a set of oriented basis functions characteristic of the information content of the original images. The oriented basis functions for the composite image are then selected from those of the different source images and the inverse of the decomposition performed to construct the composite image. Color augmentation provides information as to the relative weighting of the contribution of each source to the composite image.

  • Patent number: 5278647
Abstract: A decoder for a modified and improved MPEG signal syntax includes a subtractor responsive to an input signal, a frame buffer responsive to the subtractor, a motion compensator responsive to the buffer and to applied motion vector signals, and a multiplier responsive to frame leak signals and to a modified prediction signal for developing an output signal applied to the subtractor. Furthermore, the decoder includes a processor responsive to the motion compensator and to applied adaptive macroblock leak signals for developing the modified prediction signal. The processor comprises a transform circuit responsive to the motion compensator, a gating template responsive to the transform circuit and the adaptive macroblock leak signals, and an inverse transform circuit responsive to the gating template. The transform circuit operates on 2.times.2 blocks of pixels to form 2.times.2 blocks of transform elements. The gating template is responsive to signals that specify a treatment for 2.times.

  • Patent number: 5185819
Abstract: In a video compression system odd and even fields of video signal are independently compressed in sequences of intraframe and interframe compression modes. The odd and even fields of independently compressed data are interleaved for transmission. The fields are interleaved such that intraframe even field compressed data occurs midway between successive fields of intraframe odd field compressed data. The interleaved sequence provides receivers with twice the number of entry points into the signal for decoding without increasing the amount of data transmitted.

  • Patent number: 5067014
Abstract: An iterative process, implemented by a feedback loop, responds to all the image data in the respective analysis regions of three consecutive frames of a motion picture, to provide, after a plurality of cycles of operation thereof, an accurate estimation of the motion of either one or both of two differently moving patterns defined by the image data of these respective analysis regions. The analysis region of each frame is preferably large, and may occupy the entire frame area of a frame. The type of differently moving patterns include (1) separation by a motion bounty, (2) overlapping transparent surface in motion, (3) "picket fence" motion (4) masking of a small and/or low-contrast pattern by a dominant pattern, and (5) two-component aperture effects. Also, the operation of this iterative process inherently accurately estimates the motion of image data defining a single moving pattern.

  • Patent number: 4821290
Abstract: A binary tree search system locates and outputs video data stored in a ROM, the data corresponding to received variable length uniquely encoded codewords. The data for each codeword is stored at a unique ROM address, each address corresponding to a tree leaf. Certain ROM locations not associated with complete codewords include a partial search address for the next search node, the remainder of the search address for each node comprising a bit of the serial received encoded data. When the received bits complete a codeword, the last received bit and the prior accessed ROM stored partial address form a pointer address to a tree leaf that accesses that ROM location containing the data corresponding to that codeword. Flags are generated by each accessed location to indicate whether or not a codeword has been found. If a codeword is found, the search is restarted at the tree root.

  • Patent number: 4663660
Abstract: A technique for transmitting compressed quantized image-data from a transmitter to a receiver over a limited bandwidth communication channel employs temporal differential pulse code modulation incorporating pyramid image processing spectrum analyzers and synthesizers. This technique permits the selective elimination by data-compression of only those portions of the original image information which contribute least to the perception of image quality by a viewer of a synthesized display image at the receiver.
