Publication number: 20240271793Abstract: Fuel injection for hydrogen-gas fuels poses risks with regard to emissions, flashback, and flame-holding events in a gas turbine engine. Accordingly, embodiments of a fuel injection system are disclosed that uniformly mix gas and fuel, while stabilizing a flame and facilitating maintenance. The fuel injection system may comprise a plurality of micromixer panels, mounted in windows of a frame that are arranged circumferentially around a longitudinal axis of the gas turbine engine. Each micromixer panel may comprise a plurality of axial channels, arranged around a central pilot body that is fixed in a grommet. Two or more internal fuel feeds may supply fuel to distinct subsets of fuel jets within the outlets of the axial channels, such that the fuel injection system may be operated in multiple stages.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 15, 2023Publication date: August 15, 2024Applicant: Solar Turbines IncorporatedInventors: Christian DI NORSCIA, Rajeshriben PATEL, German VERDUZCO, Robert FANELLA, Peter SYKES, Hanjie LEE

Patent number: 12025311Abstract: Known micromixers for fuel injection (e.g., in a gas turbine engine) experience early burning or have limited operability. Accordingly, a micromixer is disclosed that utilizes an air nozzle, in combination with one or more fuel jets, to produce short flames that minimize the emission of nitrogen oxides, while providing additional benefits, such as mechanical robustness, aerodynamic efficiency, resistance to flame damage, suitability for additive manufacturing, wider operating ranges, operation with a variety of gaseous fuels, and/or amenability to control using conventional mechanisms.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2022Date of Patent: July 2, 2024Assignee: Solar Turbines IncorporatedInventors: Gareth W. Oskam, Georgina J. McGee, Yonduck Sung, Gregory Michael Balow, Rajeshriben Patel, Nathan J. Kirksey

Patent number: 11946644Abstract: No known single-stage dry low emissions fuel injectors are capable of effectively operating over all ranges of hydrogen concentrations in hydrogen/natural gas fuel mixtures. Accordingly, a fuel injector is disclosed that is capable of operating in both a premix mode for fuel mixtures with lower hydrogen concentrations and a micromix mode for fuel mixtures with higher hydrogen concentrations. The fuel injector may comprise premix jets near an inlet of the fuel injector, optionally within one or more swirlers, and micromix jets near the outlet of the fuel injector. In the premix mode, fuel with lower hydrogen concentrations is provided to the premix jets, whereas in the micromix mode, fuel with higher hydrogen concentrations is provided to the micromix jets.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2023Date of Patent: April 2, 2024Assignee: Solar Turbines IncorporatedInventors: Bryan D. Quay, Hanjie Lee, Rajeshriben Patel, Robert Fanella

Patent number: 10247155Abstract: A fuel injector for a combustion engine includes an injector head including a nozzle, a premixer, and a distributor structured to distribute a plurality of different fuels to different sets of fueling orifices in the premixer. A pilot assembly of the fuel injector is coupled to the premixer and includes a first fueling passage for a first fuel and a second fueling passage for a second fuel. Multiple sets of fueling orifices are positioned within the fuel injector, the fueling orifice sets being selectively connectable to a plurality of different fuel supplies, and both located and sized so as to accommodate a wide range of flow rates to enable a combustion engine coupled with the fuel injector to operate on fuels having a range of Wobbe numbers and compositions.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2016Date of Patent: April 2, 2019Assignee: Solar Turbines IncorporatedInventors: Rajeshriben Patel, Ram Srinivasan, James Piper, Raymond Alvarez, Rasoul Paydar
