  • Patent number: 5989839
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of determining the presence and activity of interferon inhibitors in a test sample, preferably human blood serum. The method includes the steps of culturing cells which express an interferon-inducible antigen in the presence of an interferon and then adding an aliquot of the cultured cells to a test sample and to a control sample. The expression of the interferon-inducible antigen is then measured in both the test sample and in the control sample and these two values compared to determine the presence and activity of interferon inhibitors in the test sample.

  • Patent number: 5846758
Abstract: A method for diagnosing autoimmune disease in mammals, including humans, is described. A blood sample is collected from a subject, and mononuclear white blood cells separated therefrom. The mononuclear cells then are cultured in vitro. Patients with autoimmune disease develop characteristic white cell aggregates with autophagocytosis in the culture. Mononuclear cells from normal patients do not exhibit this cell aggregation with autophagocytosis.

  • Patent number: 5736129
Abstract: A method of treating cancer by the use of a multidrug chemotherapeutic regimen determined by in vitro pharmacosensitivity tests. A cell suspension is prepared from a tumor specimen obtained from the patient. The viable tumor cell count within the cell suspension is calculated. The volume of the cell suspension is then adjusted to obtain a base cell concentration by diluting the cell suspension with patient medium in proportion with the viable tumor cell count. A sample of the cell suspension is retained as a negative control sample. Drug samples are then prepared, each drug sample containing a mixture of cell suspension, patient medium, and a drug selected from several drugs, wherein each drug sample contains a different drug which is added to the drug sample in an aliquot amount proportional to the base cell concentration. The drug samples and negative control sample are then incubated. After incubation, the drug samples and negative control sample are stained with a DNA intercalating dye.

  • Patent number: 5668119
Abstract: A topical pharmaceutical for the treatment of thrombosis or hematoma, and a method for the topical treatment of thrombosis or hematoma, are described. The topical pharmaceutical contains effective thrombosis-inhibiting amounts of heparin, allantoin, thymol, and mefenamic acid dispersed in a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier for topical administration. The method of treating thrombosis and hematoma includes externally contacting the area with an effective amount of a composition containing heparin, allantoin, thymol, and mefenamic acid.

  • Patent number: 5613791
Abstract: A medical file folder comprising a front and back contrapositioned walls with a common foldable spine therebetween. Pertinent patient medical information is displayed and stored on a medical chart printed on the exterior of the front wail of the folder. Medical documents are stored in a pocket of a transparent sheet connected to the back wall of the folder. Additionally, the medical file folder includes a resilient clamp and openable pockets therein for storage of patient information. The medical file folder is easily cataloged by having an identification tab positioned on one edge of front wall. A pair of suspension hooks positioned on the medical file folder allow easy storage on and retrieval from a suspension bar.
