  • Patent number: 6648859
Abstract: This invention relates to a drug cartridge assembly for use with a reusable body assembly of a medication delivery pen. The drug cartridge is disposable and is in the form of a single integral unit having a generally tubular barrel. Medication is pre-filled into the drug cartridge and is retained therein by an elastomeric stopper or plunger. The plunger is in sliding fluid-tight engagement with a tubular wall of the barrel. A proximal end of the tubular barrel is configured for interconnecting the drug cartridge with a pen body assembly and a distal end of the tubular barrel is configured to securely but releasably engage a needle cannula assembly.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: November 18, 2003
    Assignee: Becton Dickinson and Company
Inventors: Ralf V. Bitdinger, Katherine Birkland

  • Patent number: 5667495
Abstract: A backstop device to prevent inadvertent withdrawal of a stopper from the open distal end of a syringe barrel. The backstop, mounted to a syringe flange, includes a pair of spaced apart plates located on either side of the flange. Both plates include respective apertures accessible through lead openings formed through the plates. The bottom aperture is formed for snug contact with the syringe barrel, while the upper aperture includes a ridge engageable with the interior of the syringe barrel adjacent the open distal end. The top aperture and ridge together present a smaller passageway than the diameter of the stopper, preventing inadvertent removal thereof. The backstop can be placed on the syringe regardless of the presence or absence of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 5478316
Abstract: A device for automatically injecting a material into the body is disclosed. The device includes a drive assembly and a syringe assembly which is mounted to the drive assembly. The drive assembly includes a drive rod, a driver releasably coupled to the drive rod, and a constant force spring which urges the drive rod towards the syringe assembly. The spring first urges the coupled drive rod and driver along the axis of the device, causing the skin to be penetrated by the needle of the syringe assembly. The drive rod is then decoupled from the driver. The spring continues to urge the drive rod in the axial direction, whereby the drive rod engages a piston in the syringe assembly and causes the displacement of the material therein.

  • Patent number: 5250037
Abstract: A hypodermic syringe has a syringe barrel with a distal end and a passage therethrough communicating with a fluid-receiving chamber in the syringe barrel. A barrier extends across the passage to isolate the fluid in the chamber. A needle cannula is mounted to a needle hub slidingly engaged at the distal end of the syringe barrel. The needle cannula includes a proximally facing point for piercing the barrier in the passage to the chamber of the syringe barrel. A needle shield is mounted to the distal end of the syringe barrel, and cam means are provided for cam-guided rotational movement between the needle shield and the syringe barrel. The cam shape causes the needle shield and the needle cannula to move proximally for initially piercing the barrier and then to move distally to enable separation of the needle shield.
