Patent number: 7231937Abstract: An automatic shutoff valve is provided. The valve is preferably constructed of a check valve (which is normally shut) and a shutoff valve which is open during static, no-flow, operation. Upon initiation of flow, even a drip flow, the check valve opens, and the pressure differential from the inlet to the outlet causes a piston in the shutoff valve to move toward a shut position. As long as the pressure differential stops before the piston closes, the shutoff valve resets to the fully open position. However, if the shutoff valve shuts, it preferably must be manually reset.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2004Date of Patent: June 19, 2007Inventors: Ralph G. Greene, Nelson Edwards

Patent number: 7002161Abstract: A water treatment tank for use with water purification apparatus including an ultra-violet lamp within an encapsulating sleeve onto which incoming water is directed to provide a thin laminar flow about the bulb. The lower compartment has cooling coils about the walls for cooling the water therein relative to the water in the upper compartment. A surrounding sleeve may be located intermediate the encapsulating sleeve and an outer vessel in the tank. A leak detector is located in the encapsulating sleeve. The leak detector and outer vessel are believed to provide safety to users in the event of internal breakage in the tank. A reflective surface is also utilized to direct UV light into portions of the faucets formerly obscured from UV treatment. The faucets preferably provide self-sanitizing capability and an information center selectively displays time until next service, cost savings over bottled water and information related to the dispenser.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2004Date of Patent: February 21, 2006Inventor: Ralph G. Patent number: 6648174Abstract: A water treatment tank for use with water purification apparatus including an ultra-violet lamp within a bulb onto which incoming water is directed to provide a thin laminar flow about the bulb. The tank may have two compartments, one above the other, formed by a separating baffle. The lower compartment has cooling coils about the walls for cooling the water therein relative to the water in the upper compartment. The ultraviolet lamp and a bulb extends through both compartments and the baffle to purify the water. A controller operates a switch to turn the normally off UV lamp on before opening a fill valve to replenish water in the tank. The lamp is turned off after a first run time. The water level is sensed by a low and high level limit which allow for a volume of water in the tank which may be utilized without necessitating operation of the lamp upon each dispensing of water from the tank.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2001Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Inventor: Ralph G. Patent number: 6139726Abstract: A water treatment tank for use with water purification apparatus including an ultra-violet lamp within a bulb onto which incoming water is directed to provide a 360 degree thin laminar flow about the bulb so that all of the incoming water receives the ultra-violet rays even when water is dispensed in a fast refill fashion. The tank may have two compartments, one above the other, formed by a separating baffle. The lower compartment has cooling coils about the walls for cooling the water therein relative to the water in the upper compartment. The ultra-violet lamp and a bulb extends through both compartments and the baffle to purify the water. Each compartment communicates through a conduit to a respective dispensing faucet of the water purification apparatus. The conduit from the upper compartment is a transparent tube formed from polytetrafluorethylene so that the ultra-violet rays act on water within the tube.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1999Date of Patent: October 31, 2000Assignee: UV Cooling TechnologiesInventor: Ralph G. Patent number: 6131393Abstract: A chilling chamber (10) connected to a water reservoir (12) or to a pipe (29) within which water flows has a thermally conductive probe (16) which is connected to the cold side of a thermoelectric device (18), the hot side being connected to a heat sink (20). A tube (30) is coiled about the probe and has one end (28) connected with the water in the storage reservoir or pipe and another end (32) connected to a faucet (34). Water as a heat transfer medium (36) is stored within the chilling chamber (10) about the probe (16) and the coil of tubing (30). The probe cools the heat transfer medium which cools the water within the coil of tubing. A check valve (42) releases air in the chamber compressed as an ice ball forms about the probe. Cold water thus flows out the faucet when the faucet is opened for a short time and the water within the coil gradually raises in temperature to again be cooled by the heat transfer medium.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1999Date of Patent: October 17, 2000Assignee: Mutual of Omaha Insurance CompanyInventor: Ralph G. Patent number: 6112541Abstract: A compact chiller for receiving supply temperature water from a source as a chilling tank in which a thermally conductive chilling probe is positioned for chilling the water in the tank. Supply water is fed through the tank and to the inlet of a valve selectively positionable between open and closed positions so that water from the supply may entirely flow into the tank or have a portion flowing into the tank and the remainder through the valve. A chilled water supply tube within the tank and the outlet of the valve communicate the inlet to a spout so that chilled water or a mixture of chilled water and entering supply water may be dispensed from the faucet. The supply water may be water from the faucet of a sink diverter valve to the chiller. Filters may be connected in communication between the faucet and the entry into the chiller tank.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1999Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Inventor: Ralph G. Greene

Patent number: 5946918Abstract: A chilling chamber connected to a water tank or a reservoir which may be within a water purifier or to a pipe within which water flows has a thermally conductive probe which is connected to the cold side of a thermoelectric device, the hot side being connected to a heat sink. A tube is coiled about the probe and has one end connected with the water in the storage reservoir or pipe and another end connected to a faucet. A liquid heat transfer medium such as water is stored within the chilling chamber about the probe and the coil of tubing. The probe cools the heat transfer medium which cools the water within the coil of tubing. Cold water thus flows out the faucet when the faucet is opened for a short time and the water within the coil gradually raises in temperature to again be cooled by the heat transfer medium.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1998Date of Patent: September 7, 1999Assignee: Mutual of Omaha Insurance CompanyInventor: Ralph G. Patent number: 5662779Abstract: A water purification apparatus positionable on an existing dispenser has a valve control member positionable in the water plenum of the dispenser to control release of purified water from the apparatus to the dispenser. A feedwater tank receives supply water which is fed to a water level control tank to maintain the water level in the boiler of the apparatus above the heating element. The control tank includes a partition separating a main reservoir from a de-foamer control chamber within which anti-foaming agent may be added. A condenser is coiled into a number of convolutions about a central opening and has external heat exchanger fins. An end cap assembly closes the central opening except for a small portion through which air is blown by a fan so that substantially all of the air flows over the fins. The boiler is a cylindrical container having a peripheral lip about an open end on which a lid having a steam outlet tube is positioned.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1995Date of Patent: September 2, 1997Assignee: Market Design & Development, Inc.Inventors: Ralph G.
