Patent number: 6851988Abstract: In a battery post burning apparatus, the majority of the heat is supplied to the lead via the mold in which the finished post is being formed. The mold material in contact with the lead has a low thermal mass and high electrical and thermal resistance. The mold material may be Meehanite cast iron. Another material, such as titanium, may be used. If so, it is preferable to coat it with silver solder and provide a copper insert, where the electrical and thermal connection is being made. Insulation is disposed between the lug and terminal and a portion of the overlapping area of the lug is pressed througn an opening in the insulation means to make contact over a relatively small area with the terminal. Welding jaws are used to press the lug and terminal together and a current is provided by the welding jaws to heat up the area of contact so that the lead begins to melt in the opening. Patent number: 4146771Abstract: An electrical resistance welding apparatus for making an integral and homogeneous connection between a terminal and a battery lug accomplished by limiting the area of contact between the two as by equipping the battery with an insulation card which is at least partially disposed between the lug and the terminal. The apparatus presses a portion of the overlapping area of the lug through an opening in the insulation card to make contact over a relatively small area with the terminal by first moving one electrode to contact the terminal and then moving the remaining electrode to contact the lug. The electrode assemblies clamp the lug and terminal together. Current is provided to the electrodes to heat up the area of contact as it is made, thereby melting the lead in the opening in the insulation card. Patent number: 4080727Abstract: A method and machine for assembling sheets of battery plate separator material over the battery plates in envelope fashion and sealing the side edges together is disclosed. The machine feeds battery separator material from a storage roll into a folding station, scores a folding line across the sheet and severs the sheet from the roll, in a length double the height of a battery plate. A battery plate is fed bottom end first against the fold line of the separator sheet, and guides in a folding station cause the sheet to fold over and cover both sides of the plate. The plate and separator envelope are engaged between upper and lower conveyors adjacent to the folding station and carried away.
