  • Patent number: 4986177
Abstract: There is disclosed a load/relief apparatus for use in a calender of a papermaking machine having a force transfer member positioned between on upper fluid actuator and two lower spaced apart fluid actuators. A linking arm is releasably connected to the lower part of the transfer arm spaced between the two lower fluid actuators. The linking arm is adapted to be connected to a lifting arm for a calender roll. In operation, the upper fluid actuator exerts a generally linear downward force that is transferred by the transfer member moving downwardly against the linking arm and thereby pushing the lifting arm down. The lower fluid actuators are adapted to exert a generally upward linear force that is transferred by the transfer member moving upwardly raising the linking arm and the lifting arm. The linking arm is releasable from the transfer member to permit the linking arm to be lowered beyond the travel associated with the deflation of the lower fluid actuators during normal relief operation.

  • Patent number: 4744156
Abstract: A web drier wherein the fabric carries the web to be dried around a plurality of drier drums in a sequence with at least one turning roll positioned between each roll in the sequence so that the web carried on the fabric is in direct face-to-face contact with each of the drums. The fabric is in face-to-face contact with each of the rolls between the drums and the web is held to the fabric by suction applied by blow boxes appropriately located relative to each turning roll. The rolls may be arranged in stacks with there being two turning rolls between adjacent stacks at one end of the stacks and none at the other. This arrangement improves the drying capacity of the drier by insuring that the web is in direct contact with the heated surface of the drier drums and may be used with existing 2-tier drier drum arrangements or with drums stacked higher or even as a single row of drums.

  • Patent number: 4160694
Abstract: A twin wire web forming machine suitable for making newsprint or slower draining grades of product is provided with a substantially continuously curving S-shaped formation and dewatering path, wherein one of the wires diverges from the web subsequent to passage through a formation zone lying about an arc of a first roll, a suction compartment within a couch roll at the point of wire divergence assuring continued adherence of the web to the remaining wire as it passes around the couch roll. A brake is controlled on the first roll to provide a predetermined value of wire tension.
