    Abstract: Provided is a carbonaceous binder composition which comprises a polymerized and dehydrated carbohydrate, a monomer or polymer of resorcinol, and water. It is important that the carbohydrate is a polymer when combined with the remaining components of the composition. Polymerization of the carbohydrate prior to being combined with the other components of the composition has been found to result in an increased carbon yield upon pyrolysis of the binder. The binder composition also has an effective shelf life of three months or longer and gives off no objectionable smell either before or after being pyrolyzed. More importantly, the binder is also free of any skin or respiratory irritants, and is in effect non-carcinogenic.

    Abstract: Compositions for use as dye assistants are formed from a non-phenolic aromatic swelling agent for the fiber to be dyed mixed with just enough dispersant to cause a non-foaming emulsion upon dilution of the dye assistant in water, but not enough dispersant to interfere with the swelling process of the fiber by the dye assistant. Thus, the swelling agent is mixed with the minimum amount of surfactant required for the production of an emulsion and dispersion of the dye with little or no foaming in the dye bath. Formulations can also be prepared having higher levels of water which are non-flammable.

    Abstract: This application discloses two novel binding compositions for making silicate bonded cores and molds. In one of the binding compositions disclosed ammonia or an amine such as an ethanol amine is added to a concentrated alkali metal silicate in the amount generally in excess of 1 or 2 percent, but not so much as to decrease the solids content of the sodium silicate to more than about 95% of its original concentration. The precipitation or gellation which normally occurs in such systems can be dispersed by intensive mixing.The second novel composition is an adjuvant suitable for use in silicate bonded sands, which adjuvant is obtained by reacting a reducing sugar, an optional dicarboxylic acid or acid anhydride and boric acid. The dicarboxylic acid or acid anhydride comprises from 0% to 12% by weight of mixture, the boric acid comprises from 1/2% to 2% of the mixture and the balance is the reducing sugar.

    Abstract: Flameproof and fireproof products are formed from a fire-unstable material coated with a polymeric material which is capable of intumescing beginning at a low temperature and has adhesive qualities in conjunction with the fire-unstable material. Upon the application of heat or flame to the products, the coating material copiously intumesces to form a protective thermal insulating foam barrier which prevents the fire-unstable material from igniting or degrading to the point of evolving flammable gases or losing its dimensional stability. Continued application of heat or flame will cause the foam to char but will not destroy the products for a suprisingly long time. The polymeric coating material comprises the resinous reaction product of phosphoric acid and a reducing sugar with a hardener and containing at least one modifying agent capable of rendering the coating material highly and permanently intumescent at a low initiating temperature even after prolonged storage of the flameproof and fireproof product.

    Abstract: The present invention concerns the use of an aqueous solution of a silicate as a binder, particularly for hardening foundary molds and cores without the use of acid or other reagents to convert the silicate into a silican gel. According to the present invention, the silicate binder is not reacted but instead is rapidly dried, preferably enough within the space of 5 seconds to 10 minutes to reduce the initial water content of the aqueous silicate solution by at least 25%. In the preferred embodiments, this is achieved by forcing air through opposed porous sides of the mold box and the green sand contained therein. The present invention is also applicable to other composite forms such as the manufacture of plywood, particle board, briquettes, and the like.

    Abstract: Apparatus and method for the repetitive use of a single packed chromatographic column for the separation of a first solute from at least one second solute of differing polarity, said solutes being commingled in a sample solution. The sample solution is introduced into the inlet end of a single re-usable chromatographic column packed with a charge of porous adsorbent material suited to preferentially adsorb the first solute. A series of different eluants are then passed through the stationary phase to selectively stepwise elute the second solute, and the first adsorbed solute, and to regenerate the stationary phase before introduction of a subsequent sample solution into the column. A control means coordinates the respective sequential processing of each of a plurality of sample solutions through the same charge of porous adsorbent material in the column.
