  • Patent number: 4480390
Abstract: The invention provides an optical alignment method and apparatus for aligning a selected object with respect to an top-dead-center portion of a substantially circular wheel. A base mounted on the wheel has a positioning mechanism for effecting alignment wth the top-dead-center of the wheel. A mirror mounted on the base reflects an image of the selected object. The mirror has a reference mechanism associated therewith for referencing the image to indicate the relative alignment of the selected object with respect to the wheel top-dead-center. A sighting mechanism aligned with the reference mechanism allows accurate observation of the relative alignment between the image and the reference mechanism. The object is then moved until the image thereof is selectively aligned with the reference mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4331497
Abstract: A thin-walled annular shell of high rigidity relative to its unit weight is provided. The wall of the shell is a composite material built up layerwise of glassy alloy strips of high transverse aspect ratio such that each layer is a strip wrapped at a substantially 45.degree. helix with respect to the elongate axis of the shell and with adjacent layers having alternating directions of wrap. Bonding between adjacent layers and between strips within each layer is accomplished in a selected manner such that the composite wall is structurally monolithic for thin-walled applications thereby taking substantially full advantage of the extraordinary strength properties of glassy alloy strip.

  • Patent number: 4077462
Abstract: Improvement in apparatus for making metal filament by depositing molten metal onto the peripheral surface of a rotating annular chill roll includes provision of a stationary housing surrounding the peripheral surface of the chill roll in an arc, covering the segment beginning at the vicinity of the point of deposition of the metal onto the chill roll and terminating at a predetermined point of stripping of the solid filament from the chill roll, and defining a gap between the peripheral surface of the chill roll and the interior of the housing, together with means for introducing a fluid into the gap for passage therethrough in the direction of rotation of the chill roll. In operation, cocurrent passage of the filament and the fluid through the gap effects controlled retention of the filament on the chill roll and fixes the point at which the filament is stripped from the chill roll.
