  • Patent number: 4318994
Abstract: An improved card for use in an automated machine to detect the continued existence of microbes in a plurality of wells containing different media so that the organism can be speciated. The card includes an improved configuration wherein the wells have different reduced oxygen environments and all of the wells have an improved bubble chamber connected to the well by a bifurcated passage.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 26, 1981
Date of Patent: March 9, 1982
    Assignee: McDonnell Douglas Corporation
Inventors: Michael C. Meyer, Leodis V. Woods, James J. Underwood, Ralph Wilkinson, Victoria Stratman
  • Patent number: 4279995
Abstract: 2-Deoxy-D-Ribose is used as a carbohydrate source which selectively differentiates all of the Salmonella spp., Arizona spp., and 60% of the Citrobacter freundii from other members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. By combining the 2-Deoxy-D-Ribose with Citrobacter freundii inhibitors and thioglycollic acid, sodium salt to impart semi-anaerobic conditions in the medium as well as suitable nutrients and buffers, a selective Salmonella broth is compounded which lends itself to automated identification or enumeration systems.

  • Patent number: 4072575
Abstract: A broth medium for the detection of Escherichia coli in water samples, i.e., sewage specimens, and process for inoculation and incubation of said broth to conduct satisfactory detection tests. The medium employs para-coumaric acid and acetazolamide to inhibit growth of unwanted microorganisms and thus greatly reduces false positive test results.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 3, 1976
Date of Patent: February 7, 1978
    Assignee: McDonnell Douglas Corporation
Inventors: James W. Lanham, Ralph A. Wilkinson, Victoria A. Dagy
  • Patent number: 4000041
Abstract: A broth medium for the identification of Escherichia coli. The medium employs coumaric acid, preferably para-coumaric acid, to inhibit growth and metabolic activity of other gram negative microorganisms and thus eliminate false positive test results in a medium designed for E. coli organisms.

Date of Patent: December 28, 1976
    Assignee: McDonnell Douglas Corporation
Inventors: James W. Lanham, Ralph A. Wilkinson, Leodis V. Woods
