Patent number: 8277468Abstract: A medical instrument for engaging tissue includes a flexible shaft, a tissue piercing coil at a distal portion of the shaft, and a tissue stabilizer positioned over the shaft and biased in a distal direction such that as the tissue piercing coil enters tissue, the tissue stabilizer is urged against a surface of the tissue. A medical instrument for reconfiguring tissue includes a flexible shaft defining a lumen housing actuating controls, and a distal actuating assembly with a sealing portion configured to substantially seal the shaft lumen from contact with bodily fluids. A cartridge assembly includes first and second members configured for releasable attachment to a medical instrument, and a holder configured to receive the first and second members and to be released from the first and second members upon action of the first and second members attaching to the medical instrument.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 2010Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc.Inventors: Michael D. Laufer, Jeffrey C. Cerier, Amos G. Cruz, Jonathan O'Keefe, Richard Andrews, Ram Chuttani, Vincent A. Piucci, Jr., Michael Barenboym, Neal H. Marshall, Randal B. Chinnock

Publication number: 20110295299Abstract: The technology described herein provides methods for addressing obesity by introducing a device into the stomach. Embodiments of a device for treating obesity may comprise a shaped membrane construct that contains a swellable material. The construct may be contained within a capsule which is ingested by a patient. When the capsule dissolves in the stomach, the gastric secretions may diffuse through the membrane and spontaneously swell the internal material, which swells and stiffens the construct sufficiently to create a sensation of satiety by both filling gastric volume and by distending the walls of the stomach. The volume of the construct may be sufficient to prevent passage through the pyloric sphincter. After a set period of time or after the administration of a degradation formulation, the device may structurally degrade to allow passage through the pyloric sphincter and eventual passage from the body.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 2, 2011Publication date: December 1, 2011Inventors: Gavin Braithwaite, Martin van Buren, Stephen Spiegelberg, Shantanu Gaur, Samuel Levy, Jonathan Wecker, Ram Chuttani

Publication number: 20030055442Abstract: A method includes advancing an apparatus having an elongated member transorally into the stomach. The apparatus includes a distal end effector having first and second members configured to engage tissue. The first and second members are movable relatively toward one another generally in a first plane. The method includes moving the distal end effector relative to the elongated member in the first plane such that the distal end effector is retroflexed out of alignment with the elongated member to position the first and second members for engagement with the tissue. At least one of the first and second members carries a fixation device for fixing engaged portions of tissue together.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 18, 2002Publication date: March 20, 2003Inventors: Michael D. Patent number: 5054501Abstract: A steerable guide wire for cannulation of tubular or vascular organs. The guide wire has a distal end and a proximal end. The guide wire has at least one coil forming a helix near the distal end of the guide wire to aid in the negotiation through tubular or vascular organs such as endoscopic retrograde or antegrade cannulation of the cystic duct. A removable clamp is secured to the proximal end of the guide wire to allow the user to apply torsional and longitudinal force to steer the guide wire into position.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 1990Date of Patent: October 8, 1991Assignee: Brigham & Women's HospitalInventors: Ram Chuttani, Michael D.
