  • Patent number: 5165543
Abstract: A protected package (20) of optical fiber includes a spool which includes a hub (22) and two spaced flanges (24,26). Optical fiber (23) is wound on the hub with an end of the fiber being accessible to allow the fiber to be tested. A strip (52) of plastic material is wrapped about the spool with longitudinal edge portions (54,54) of the strip overhanging the flanges to provide a cover (50). The protected package permits withdrawal of the fiber through a gap (64) between the cover and the flanges. Further, in a preferred embodiment, each longitudinal edge portion is provided with openings (60,60). The openings are spaced apart such that when a strip is wrapped about any of expected size spools, at least one pair of the openings will become aligned to allow insertion of fastening means (62) which function to hold the strip assembled to the spool to protect the fiber and to prevent unintended removal of the cover.

  • Patent number: 4533570
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are disclosed for coating elongated materials such as optical fibers wherein a shear force is developed by the elongated material moving through liquid coating material in a coating applicator of a magnitude such as to prevent the coating material from flooding the applicator.

  • Patent number: 4410344
Abstract: A method of uniformly coating an optical waveguide fiber 10 comprises the steps of suspending an elongated glassy optical fiber preform 11 in an upright orientation from a preform holder that includes a collet 14 to which an x-y translator 15 is coupled, heating the preform, and drawing fiber from the bottom of the heated preform. The drawn fiber is passed through a tubular coating applicator 32 located beneath the preform, and the position of the fiber is sensed as it is being drawn. In response to sensed deviations in fiber position from along a preselected path that extends through the tubular coating applicator along the applicator axis, the preform is repositioned by horizontal movement of the preform holder so as to return the drawn fiber to the preselected path and thereby maintain its travel through the coating applicator substantially along the applicator axis.

  • Patent number: 4383843
Abstract: Apparatus for heating a vertically suspended preform from which lightguide fiber is drawn includes a torch having a plurality of ducts that open to a surface adjacent to a lower end of the preform. Fuel and oxidizing gases flow from the ducts, mix at the surface and flame about a necked-down, lower portion of the preform to form a melt cone from which the fiber is drawn. The ducts and the preform are positioned to cause a combustion zone of each flame to impinge upon the preform. In a preferred embodiment, the openings of the ducts are arrayed in a circle which is referred to as a pitch circle and which has a diameter that is less than that of the preform. Also, the ducts are arranged so that the gases are directed at a predetermined angle to the axis of the preform.

  • Patent number: 4253863
Abstract: A large plurality of fiber optic preforms are manufactured by chemically vapor depositing the fiber optic glass constituents on the exterior surface of electrically heatable mandrels. A corresponding plurality of mandrels are located relative to a common source of materials for chemical vapor deposition thereon. A substantial savings in materials cost, manufacturing time and greater uniformity between the individual preforms is thereby accomplished.

  • Patent number: 4149772
Abstract: An optical fibre has a core and a plurality of rings surrounding the core. In one arrangement the core and subsequent alternate rings are light transmitting, while the intermediate rings are of cladding material. In an alternative arrangement the core and alternate rings are of cladding material and intermediate rings are light transmitting. The light transmitting rings can be of varying refractive index or of constant refractive index.

  • Patent number: 3960530
Abstract: A method of coating a continuous glass fiber filament with plastic, in which plastic is charged into a vertical closed cylinder having a die opening at its lower end and an axial core tube terminating in the die opening to form an annular orifice. The plastic in liquid form is forced through the orifice by pressurized gas introduced into the upper portion of the cylinder while the glass filament is drawn continuously through the core tube.
