    Abstract: Methods for synthesizing and purifying 2-aryl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine compounds are provided. The method includes heating a reaction mixture including a phenolphthalein, a primary aryl amine, and an acid catalyst to form a phthalimidine; precipitating the phthalimidine from the reaction mixture to provide a crude phthalimidine; providing a solution including the crude phthalimidine, an additive, and at least one solvent; contacting the solution with one or more purification agents to provide a treated solution; precipitating and recovering a phthalimidine adduct from the treated solution; and recovering a purified phthalimidine compound from the adduct.

    Abstract: A method of decoding linear block code uses an iterative message passing algorithm with a binary image of a parity check matrix of the linear block code, wherein the parity check matrix is adapted from one iteration to another based on the reliabilities of bits in the linear block code. The adaptation involves reducing a submatrix corresponding to the less reliable bits in the linear block code to a sparse nature before applying the message passing algorithm in each iteration. The first solid is then triturated with a trituration solvent and washed to obtain a second solid, wherein the second solid comprises greater than or equal to 97 weight percent 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine, based on the total weight of the second solid. The second solid may be polymerized to form a polycarbonate.
