  • Publication number: 20230013537
Abstract: A superhard material-containing object is configured to have a controlled and repeatable three-dimensional geometry and/or shape. The object further includes a desired three-dimensional spatial variation in microstructure, grain size and/or composition. The superhard material is selected from the group consisting of diamond, boron-doped diamond and cubic boron nitride. A process for production of a superhard material-containing object from a powder of a superhard material, a binder and an optional additive, includes the steps of: (a) producing a feedstock of the superhard material and a polymer binder; (b) extruding one or more filaments from a granulated superhard material-binder feedstock; (c) preparing a printed superhard material-containing object using the one or more filaments; (d) subjecting the printed object to debinding to prepare a debindered object; and (e) sintering the debindered printed object to produce the superhard material-containing object.

  • Patent number: 8016056
Abstract: A cutting tool that includes at least one tungsten carbide cutting element disposed on a support, wherein at least one tungsten carbide cutting element has at least one localized region having a material property different from the remaining region, wherein the at least one localized region having a different material property is prepared by a method including determining at least one localized region needing a variation in a material property different from the remaining region; coating a portion of a surface of the at least one tungsten carbide cutting element with a refractory material such that a surface corresponding to the localized region is left uncoated; and treating the coated cutting element with a selected agent to diffuse the selected agent into the localized region is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7552783
Abstract: A drill bit including a bit body having an upper end adapted to be detachably secured to a drill string and at least one leg at its lower end, each leg having a downwardly and inwardly extending journal bearing, at least one roller cone mounted on each journal bearing, at least one cutting element disposed on the at least one roller cone; and a hardfacing overlay on at least a portion of at least one of an inner surface of the at least one roller cone and a surface of the journal bearing, wherein a composition of the hardfacing overlay proximate an outside surface of the hardfacing overlay is different from a composition of the hardfacing overlay proximate an interface between the hardfacing overlay and the at least a portion of at least one of the inner surface of the at least one roller cone and the surface of the journal bearing is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7549912
Abstract: A method for manufacturing drill bit inserts in which the inserts are finished in a centrifugal disc finishing machine. The centrifugal disc finishing machine comprises a configured surface rotating relative to a stationary receptacle, and the inserts may be finished with a mass of materials comprising at least one of a group of media, parts, detergent, and solution. Also, a method of increasing drill bit insert performance comprising accelerating a plurality of inserts in a high-energy finishing machine, wherein the acceleration results in a generally toroidal interaction between the inserts and at least one of the group comprising media, parts, detergent, and solution.

  • Patent number: 6286406
Abstract: A cutting tool insert includes a cutting tip mounted into a first recess of an injection molded hard refractory compound insert having a second recess of preselected size and shape for locating the insert to a cutting tool. A preferred cutting tip is a diamond and a preferred hard refractory compound is a tungsten carbide with a cobalt binder.

  • Patent number: 4556424
Abstract: A powder metallurgy composite material comprising grains of a relatively hard material and a binder for binding the grains together, the binder being metastable and transformable at ambient temperature by the application of mechanical force from an initial state in which the major phase of the binder is austentic to a second state in which the major phase of the binder is martensitic, whereby the binder, while undergoing this transformation, absorbs mechanical energy applied to the composite material for increasing its fracture toughness and resistance to fatigue crack nucleation and propagation. Also disclosed is a method of heat-treating the composite materials to improve their transformation-toughening characteristics. A heat-treatable composite material having such improved transformation-toughening properties is also disclosed.
