  • Patent number: 9647902
Abstract: An independent overlay and a method for creating an independent overlay of a virtualized network for virtualized hosts over a physical network to allow access between a first virtualized guest and a second virtualized guest over the physical network. The independent overlay includes a physical network; a first virtualized host instantiating thereon a first guest; a second virtualized host instantiating thereon a second guest, wherein a first communication port and a second communication port are communicatively connected to constitute a distributed communication element that enables a virtualized network for communication between the first guest and the second guest via the first communication port and the second communication port, respectively; and a media access (MAC) discovery mechanism.

  • Patent number: 9306832
Abstract: A method for operating a virtualized network that communicatively connects between a plurality of communication ports, instantiated for a plurality of guest operating systems executed over a plurality of hosts. The method comprises instantiating a communication port for each of the plurality of guests; performing a discovery media access control (MAC) address process of at least one destination guest of the plurality of guests by a source guest; sending a ping request from the source request to the at least one destination guest; and creating the virtualized network to allow communication between the source guest with the at least one destination guest, wherein the virtualized network is created over the physical network.

  • Patent number: 8924564
Abstract: A mechanism for migration of client-side virtual machine system resources is described. A method of embodiments includes receiving notification that a virtual machine (VM) is being live migrated from a first server to a second server, connecting client resources associated with the VM to the second server during the live migration of the VM, and maintaining, during the live migration, an active VM connection of the client resources to the first server and an inactive VM connection of the client resources to the second server, the client resources pertaining to a client application and associated with the VM to enable the VM to access the client resources. The method further includes, upon completion of the live migration, disconnecting the active VM connection with the first server and activating the inactive VM connection between the one or more client resources and the second server.

  • Patent number: 8150971
Abstract: In one embodiment, a mechanism for migration of client-side virtual machine system resources is disclosed. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving notification that a virtual machine (VM) is to be live migrated from a first server to a second server, connecting one or more client resources associated with the VM to the second server during the live migration of the VM while maintaining a simultaneous active VM connection of the one or more client resources to the first server, and disconnecting the active VM connection of the one or more client resources to the first server when the live migration of the VM is complete.

  • Patent number: 7073053
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for a boot progression scheme for reliably initializing a system. A boot progression data structure is maintained to indicate which of multiple boot images should be initially loaded upon startup of the system. During a boot phase, the boot progression data structure (e.g., a stack or other data structure) is modified to indicate a next boot image to use upon a next startup of the system. If the boot image provides a functional system, then the boot progression data structure is updated to once again indicate to boot with this image, and possibly removing references to other boot images. Otherwise, a reset or restart operation is performed to boot using another image. In this manner, a remote system can be upgraded across a network, and should the upgrade not perform correctly, the system reverts to a previous boot image.
