  • Publication number: 20140265988
Abstract: An electric converter is provided which uses independently controlled field coils to impress a temporary magnetic field on a rotor movable relative to one or more armatures. In some embodiments, the rotor of the programmable electric converter is rotatable with the axis of rotation being on a horizontal or vertical axis. In various embodiments, the electric converter disclosed herein may be adapted for use as a continuous power solution to provide power for a limited period of time in the event of a power outage by absorbing energy and storing it mechanically in the rotor. In some embodiments, the electric converter may be utilized as a generator. In some embodiments, both AC and DC could be simultaneously produced, where AC is generated in one armature coil and DC in another coil. In some embodiments, the programmable electric converter can operate as an AC to AC converter, AC to DC converter, DC to AC converter, or DC to DC converter.

  • Publication number: 20140245619
Abstract: A guarded surgical knife handle includes a handle portion with a blade holder, a chamber within the handle portion, and a slot. The guarded surgical knife handle also includes a guard having an open distal end slidably mounted within the handle portion that can slide longitudinally between an unguarded position and a guarded position. The guard is sized to surround the blade in the guarded position. The guarded surgical knife handle also includes a latch that latches the guard when the guard is slid into the guarded position and a first button that disengages the latch. The guarded surgical knife handle includes a bias member that forces the guard in a proximal direction to an unguarded position when the latch is disengaged along with a second button extending through the slot used to slide the guard in a distal direction into the guarded position.

  • Publication number: 20140165778
Abstract: Rotors usable in energy storage devices and power systems are formed by orienting a thicker region of a first lamination above a thinner region of a second lamination to form a stacked pair. Multiple stacked pairs of laminations can be positioned in vertical alignment and compressively retained. Usable laminations can be removed from a sheet of material having thicker and thinner regions along its width, each lamination including a visible indicator to facilitate visual identification of the thicker and thinner regions of the lamination. Visible indicators can also be used to identify and position the top and bottom faces of the laminations in the same orientation, and to rotationally offset stacked pairs of laminations from one another to account for possible variations along the length of the sheet of material.

  • Publication number: 20140167533
Abstract: Rotors assemblies usable in energy storage devices and power systems include a plurality of laminations oriented in vertical alignment, a first plate contacting a first side of the laminations, a second plate contacting a second side of the laminations, and at least one fastener engaged with the plates to compressively retain the laminations and limit relative movement of the laminations. Fasteners can engage the plates via an interference fit and pass through a clearance in the laminations sized to limit contact between the fasteners and the laminations during rotation of the rotor assembly. The laminations can be arranged with a thicker region of a first lamination above a thinner region of a second to form a stacked pair, and multiple stacked pairs can be rotationally offset from one another.

  • Publication number: 20140141633
Abstract: An electrical connector for connecting to ground and first and second signal lines includes a ground contact, a first signal contact, a second signal contact, and a switch connected to the first signal contact and the ground contact. The switch is biased “on” until after the first signal contact is connected to the first signal line, the ground contact is connected to the ground, and the second signal contact is connected to the second signal line. The switch, during connection of the connector to ground and first and second signal lines, is thereby automatically triggered to “off” during connection of the connector. If the first and second signal lines are differential signals, the switch, instead, electrically connects and disconnects the first signal contact to the second signal contact.

  • Publication number: 20140023809
Abstract: Insulation systems employing expansion features to insulate elongated containers subject to extreme temperature fluctuations, and related components and methods are disclosed. Elongated containers, such as pipes, tanks, vessels may have contents that need to be insulated to prevent heat exchange with the outside environment. Insulation systems are disposed along the perimeter of the elongated containers to prevent the heat exchange. In cases where the insulation systems are subject to extreme temperature fluctuations, components of the insulation may thermally expand and/or contract, and may form gaps between the components. Alternatively, damaging stresses may be formed as the thermal dimensional changes may be restricted as part of the installation. The insulation system comprises expansion features to better enable the gaps to be filled and relieve damaging stresses. In this manner, the elongated containers may be efficiently insulated even while subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations.

  • Patent number: 8603014
Abstract: Disclosed is a “hands-free”, autonomously operating, battery-powered apparatus with electronic programmable actuation circuitry for non-invasive ultrasonic treatment of ischemic stroke, microatheromas of the cerebral vasculature, intracranial hypertension, and other cerebrovascular pathologies such as hypoperfusion associated with migraine. The apparatus is provided with registration members to facilitate stereotactic placement of the headset on the skull with respect to target intracranial anatomy. Once fitted in place on the skull and activated, the device does not require clinical intervention during operation; does not need skilled technical adjustment of the waveform patterns; and achieves therapeutic results with power consumption of less than 400 mAmp-hr, thus permitting extended portable operation without external power and eliminating the need for assisted cooling. Using a device of the invention, transcranial ultrasound may be self-administered.

  • Patent number: 8561236
Abstract: Stepped-edge and side-support members, systems, assemblies, and related methods for an innerspring assembly or other core are disclosed. In one embodiment, an innerspring assembly or core is provided having an interior area of a first height surrounded by one or more exterior, perimeter area(s) of shorter height(s) to provide a stepped-edge innerspring assembly or core. At least a portion of side-support members are placed onto at least a portion of the top surface of the perimeter area to provide edge-support for the innerspring assembly or core. In this manner, a greater portion of the side-support members can be disposed in the sleeping area of the innerspring assembly or core since the underlying perimeter area provides spring support to the side-support members. Further, this support can assist in retention and/or recovery of the shape of the side-support members to further prevent or reduce compression set of the side-support members.
