Patent number: 7168355Abstract: A method and apparatus for chopping long unwound items like fiber, fiber strands, yarn, etc. The chopper has a backup roll, a blade roll and a biasing system for forcing the backup roll and the blade roll together at a desired force during set up and operation. The biasing system contains a mechanism such as a slip clutch or a limited torque stepping motor for maintaining a substantially constant biasing force at set up and during operation while allowing the rolls to separate slightly to pass a temporary thicker feed without recoil that currently shortens blade and backup roll working layer life.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 2002Date of Patent: January 30, 2007Assignee: Johns ManvilleInventors: Randall Clark Bascom, Douglas James Kempski, John Joseph Dembowski

Patent number: 7159293Abstract: An attachment structure for a load bearing fabric. The attachment structure includes interfitted inner and outer rings. The outer ring includes a fabric leg 74 carrying a load bearing fabric. The inner ring defines a channel receiving the fabric leg 74. The inner ring and outer ring are configured to stretch the fabric upon insertion of the fabric leg 74 into the channel. The present invention also provides a method for securing a load bearing fabric to a support structure, generally including the steps of (a) providing an outer ring having fabric leg 74, (b) attaching a section of load bearing fabric to the fabric leg 74, (c) providing an inner ring having a channel adapted to receive the leg of the outer ring and (d) installing the outer ring to the inner ring by inserting the leg into the channel, the insertion forcing the fabric down into the channel and stretching the fabric to the desired tension.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2004Date of Patent: January 9, 2007Assignee: Dahti, Inc.Inventors: Timothy P. Coffield, Ronnie K. Watson, Soren S. Ingomar Petersen, Matthew E. Chrostowski, Randall Clark Lewis

Patent number: 7152514Abstract: A chopper for chopping fibers or fiber strands having a back up roll and a blade roll containing blades that work against a peripheral surface of the back up roll and a method of using is disclosed. The chopper has a number of improved features for reducing the frequency of long fibers or long fiber strands and fuzz from getting into the chopped product. The chopper can have one or any combination of the improvements. The improvements include a strand guide located at least two feet up stream of the chopper, a first starting roll for starting a new strand that runs on a fluid bearing that can be adjusted to control the RPM of the first starting roll, a mount for a roll that runs against the peripheral surface of said back up roll, a strand guide insert for reducing fuzz generation and for preventing fuzz from getting into the product, and a deflector plate for catching and deflecting chopped strands thrown off the back up roll into a chopped strand product chute.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2003Date of Patent: December 26, 2006Assignee: Johns ManvilleInventors: Randall Clark Bascom, Harold Miles Hendrickson, Russell Donovan Arterburn, Carlos Gilberto Santizo, Emery Sidney Barber

Publication number: 20060165142Abstract: A method for determining a condition of the laser system includes determining a change in a laser current from an initial value. A method for measuring a laser current includes determining a difference between the values of a power supply current, which is the value of the laser current. A method for measuring a transmitted power includes generating a first control signal that sets a magnitude of a bias current supplied to a laser, generating a second control signal that sets a of a modulation current supplied to the laser, and determining a difference between values of a high and a low transmitted powers. A method for measuring a received optical power includes determining a received OMA corresponding to the power signal, which is the transmitted OMA minus a known loss through a calibration fiber that couples the laser transmitter to the laser receiver.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 16, 2005Publication date: July 27, 2006Inventors: Michael Robinson, Gideon Romm, Randall Clark, Frederick Miller

Publication number: 20060096700Abstract: An aircraft part manufacturing device for automated composite lay up includes a mandrel tool having a an interior mandrel surface that conforms to an outside mold line (OML) of a part: to be manufactured. One or more circular rings surround the mandrel and are attached to the mandrel. The circular rings rotate supported by bearings in a bearing cradle so that the mandrel rotates concentrically with the circular rings about an axis of rotation passing through the center of the circular rings. Multiple composite material delivery heads simultaneously deliver material directly to the outside mold line on the interior mandrel surface while the mandrel is rotated. A cantilever supported gantry beam supports the material delivery heads inside the interior mandrel surface. A connecting mechanism connects the material delivery heads to the gantry beam and provides motion of the material delivery heads relative to the interior mandrel surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 9, 2005Publication date: May 11, 2006Inventors: Randall Clark, Dwight Engwall, Mark Yonash, Jeffrey New

Patent number: 6619573Abstract: A chopper for chopping items such as fibers, fiber strands, ribbon, etc. by passing the items continuously in a loose, unwound, condition through the nip of a blade roll and a backup roll having a working layer on its outer periphery. The chopper of the present invention uses one or more rolls that are radially expandable and retractable to replace the blade roll and/or the backup roll on the prior art choppers so that worn blades and/or a worn working layer can be more quickly and more easily replaced with a new or repaired working layer or blade holder containing sharp blades. The chopper of the present invention eliminates the need to carry large, heavy, awkward rolls through the fiber forming rooms or areas where the items are being chopped and also to transport such rolls back and forth to the location where they are being rebuilt.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2001Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Johns Manville International, Inc.Inventors: Russell Donovan Arterburn, Randall Clark Bascom
