  • Patent number: 6747431
Abstract: A method for calibrating electric motors using current-sensing only is disclosed. The method involves applying a voltage in pulse-width modulated fashion for a short time to insure motion of the motor. Following startup, varying voltages are pulsed to the motor, switching polarity at regular intervals. The current generated in the motor by each level of voltage is measured. The data generated provide a reasonably accurate view of the properties of the motor, allowing for more precise velocity control.

  • Patent number: 6742866
Abstract: An ink jet printing apparatus forms a printed image on a print medium based on image data. The apparatus includes an ink jet print head having ink ejection nozzles in a nozzle array. Ink is ejected from the nozzles and onto the print medium as the print head scans across the print medium in a scan direction, thereby forming the image on the print medium. The nozzle array on the print head includes a first substantially columnar array of nozzles aligned with a print medium advance direction which is perpendicular to the scan direction. The first array has a first upper subarray pair that includes a first upper left and a first upper right subarray of nozzles. The first upper left and a first upper right subarrays each include a substantially linear arrangement of n number of nozzles having equal nozzle-to-nozzle spacings. The nozzle-to-nozzle spacing in the first upper right subarray is equivalent to the nozzle-to-nozzle spacing in the first upper left subarray.

  • Patent number: 6729613
Abstract: One method operates a pick motor and a separate feed motor to pick and feed a sheet for printing. Desired pick and feed motor velocities are obtained from respective first and second functions of sheet position. Sheet position for obtaining both desired motor velocities is determined by the pick system until a predetermined event. The feed-system sheet position is synchronized to the pick-system sheet position upon the happening of the event. Sheet position for obtaining both desired motor velocities is determined by the feed system after the event. Another method operates a printer pick motor and includes starting picking by driving the pick motor in a first direction, to move a sheet forward, with an input sufficient to prevent any teetering transitions between peaks and valleys of an encoder sensor output which would be falsely counted as forward motion by a single-channel encoder.

  • Patent number: 6640157
Abstract: A method of the invention is for operating a media feed motor of a printer to perform a media feed move of a predetermined distance and includes steps a) through c). Step a) includes choosing a position-error scale factor for a media feed move that is within a range of distances. Step b) includes calculating a media-feed-motor drive signal which includes a position error contribution substantially equal to the product of the position-error scale factor and the difference between a desired final media position at the end of a media feed move and the actual media position. Step c) includes modifying the position error contribution in step b) to reduce its effect when the predetermined distance is greater than the maximum distance within the range but not when the predetermined distance is less than the maximum distance within the range.

  • Patent number: 6637742
Abstract: A multi-function media eject system and method for operation particularly useful for ink jet printers. At the start of a print job, the media type and print format are determined. If the media is either banner paper or envelope, or if the print format is draft quality printing, wings and kickers of the eject system are disabled, so the media exits the printer without support from the wings or influence from the kickers.

  • Patent number: 6629752
Abstract: A printing method for ink jet printing on a recording substrate in which a column of N dot forming nozzles for projecting ink onto a printing area are arranged, wherein N is an integer greater than 2. The column of dot forming nozzles are moved horizontally across the printing area and in each column of the printing area the printhead deposits one or more dots from a subgroup of S dot forming nozzles, wherein S is an integer of from 1 to about N−1. In each column of the printing area, not more than every Gth nozzle deposits a dot and a single nozzle deposits a dot not more than every Gth column, wherein G is an integer from 1 to about S. The subgroup of S dot forming nozzles is shifted vertically among the N dot forming nozzles in at least two adjacent columns according to a predetermined pattern. The recording substrate is vertically advanced in a first direction by a height of about Q nozzles, wherein Q=(S/G). Printer apparatuses including the printing method.

  • Patent number: 6604808
Abstract: A method for determining the skew of a printhead of a printer. At least three images are printed which are at least partially aligned substantially along the printhead scan direction with the middle image printed from one of the upper and lower portions of the printhead and with the adjacent images printed from the other of the upper and lower portions of the printhead. A sensor is moved in the printhead scan direction over the images. A function is calculated from the sensor output, wherein the calculated function indicates the skew of the printhead.
