Patent number: 8806563Abstract: A system and method for providing video signals wherein the video signals from a single video source may be separately passed over two different transmission paths. Each transmission path includes an encoder, a communications channel and a decoder. The output of each communications path at the decoder provides the video signals and an alarm signal. The alarm signal indicates an error or disruption of the video signals over the corresponding communications path. The outputted video and alarm signals are provided to a video protection switch (VPS) device which provides the video signal from the second transmission path if the alarm signals indicates an error or disruption in the first transmission path. In one embodiment, the VPS has multiple switches, one for each of plural video sources, and a redundant switch and protection ports. The redundant switch and protection ports may be connected to receive the video and alarm signals if one of the switches in the VPS fails.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2013Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: Qwest Communications International Inc.Inventors: William C. Coufal, Randall E. Adams, Kurt E. Ackerman

Patent number: 6419483Abstract: A method and apparatus for curing photocurable dental materials involve a solid state light emitter and a source of electrical current connected to the light emitter. The source of electrical current provides a current to the light emitter that is sufficient to reduce the lifetime of the light emitter to less than 10 hours. The intensity of light from the light emitter is substantially increased and the apparatus can be conveniently disposed of after use on a single patient. A light guide that includes two conical optical surfaces collects light from the solid state light emitter and optionally directs the light to a third optical surface which has the shape of an elongated, curved tube.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2000Date of Patent: July 16, 2002Assignee: 3M Innovative Properties CompanyInventors: Randall E. Patent number: 5827058Abstract: An orthodontic assembly includes one or more orthodontic brackets that are releasably received in a tubular carrier. The carrier has arms with outer end sections that are spaced apart from each other to present a channel therebetween. The outer end sections of the arms are received in occlusal and gingival recesses of each bracket in order to support the bracket in suspended relation. The carrier is particularly useful for holding brackets during a manufacturing operation or during transport of the brackets from manufacturing operation to another. The carrier is also useful for supporting brackets in a package for shipment to the end user, especially when the brackets are precoated with a layer of adhesive.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1997Date of Patent: October 27, 1998Assignee: Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co.Inventors: John S. Kelly, Russell A. Jordan, Randall E. Adam

Patent number: 5711665Abstract: An orthodontic bracket includes a base with a central opening, and a body with a passage aligned with the opening. A curing light assembly includes an outer end portion that is removably received in the passage for curing adhesive beneath the central section of the bracket body. Once the adhesive beneath the central section of the bracket body has cured to temporarily tack the bracket base to the patient's tooth, adhesive extruded from the peripheral edge of the bracket base can be readily removed without dislodging the bracket from its intended position.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1995Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: Minnesota Mining & ManufacturingInventors: Randall E. Patent number: 5569683Abstract: A gel includes a multi-component scented mixture in which the components act in concert to create a perceived scent, disposed in a polymer matrix comprising the polymerization product of one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The monomers are selected such that the gel (a) has sufficient mechanical integrity to retain its shape under ambient conditions and (b) releases the components of the scented mixture in a manner that substantially preserves the native scent of the mixture upon release.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1995Date of Patent: October 29, 1996Assignee: Thermedics, Inc.Inventors: Matthew W. Bootman, Randall E. Adams

Patent number: 5538129Abstract: A package for an adhesive precoated dental appliance such as an orthodontic bracket includes a container having a well and a flange, and a cover that extends over an opening of the well. A pressure sensitive adhesive releasably connects the cover to the flange along a first region, and a hermetic seal extends between the cover and the flange along a second region that is located between the first region and the opening of the well. The hermetic seal cooperates with the pressure sensitive adhesive to provide a reliable, easily openable package. The hermetic seal also prevents volatile components of adhesive on the dental appliance from contacting the pressure sensitive adhesive and thereby decreases loss of the volatile components from within the package in order to extend the expected shelf life of the adhesive precoated appliance.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1995Date of Patent: July 23, 1996Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Bruce E. Chester, James D. Cleary, Evangelos G. Georgakis, Russell A. Jordan, Kenneth E. Hoevel, Randall E. Adam

Patent number: 5445770Abstract: An orthodontic appliance such as a bracket is made of a polymeric material with reinforcing fiber structure embedded in the polymeric material. The reinforcing fiber structure includes relatively long filaments that extend about the perimeter of the bracket including the periphery of an archwire slot. In one embodiment, a method for making the bracket includes the steps of placing a tubular fiber preform in a mold assembly in an orientation aligned with a mesial-distal axis of the resultant bracket, and then closing the mold assembly in directions toward a central axis of the preform.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1994Date of Patent: August 29, 1995Assignee: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Randall E. Adam, James D. Cleary, Jerold S. Horn, Said Pazirandeh

Patent number: 5391420Abstract: Label-like, hermetically-sealed perfume pouch samplers with artwork on their top surface and a pressure sensitive adhesive bottom surface. The adhesive bottom surface may be employed to attach the pouch labels to pages of a magazine or other mailer, providing an efficient method of mass distribution of perfume samples. The fragrance is stored in a perfume-releasing article such as an ultraviolet radiation-cured perfume-doped polymer, or a fragrance-laden polymer gel of modified cellulosic, ethyl alcohol, fragrance oil, an antioxidant, and water, surrounded by two perfume impervious sealed barrier layers. There is disclosed a method of manufacturing the perfume pouch labels on a support web that can be wound onto rolls from which the pouch labels may be readily released and applied rapidly and precisely to advertising pages.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1993Date of Patent: February 21, 1995Assignee: Thermedics Inc.Inventors: Matthew W.
