Sliding attachment points removably connect the armor carrier to the upper protector to allow for mobility and articulation. Accessories such as a throat guard and deltoid guards are removably attached to the mantel. Shoulder suspension members are inserted into the primary yoke to support and distribute the weight of the armor carrier. The armor carrier includes a magnetically attachable front accessory panel and zippered pouches on the front and back to receive and retain body armor plates.

Both the pectoral and abdominal members may include a contoured surface, that in some instances, substantially match the exterior profile of the wearer's chest and abdomen, respectively. The pectoral and abdominal members are configured to conform to the respective area of the wearer when making contact under the weight of the armor carrier and disposition the ballistic plate in an aligned position with respect to the wearer's torso.

The shells can be configured as hard shells, cushioned shells, shock absorbing bump shells, or ballistic shells. The shells are interchangeable and removably attachable to one another by mounts and/or interference fits. All the shells or only some of the shells may include one or more ventilation openings. The outer shell or the intermediate shell may include a first accessory space for receiving a first accessory thereon. About the side portions of the outer shell or intermediate shell, the shells may include a secondary accessory space for receiving a secondary accessory thereon. In one exemplary embodiment, the inner shell may comprise one or more inflatable pads connected to an inflation member including an inflation valve.

The sizes of the section are varied so that the resultant seam lines of adjacent layers are offset and spaced apart from one another, but the overall size and shape of each layer is the same. This avoids stacking and bunching of the seam lines which can cause rigidity and discomfort.
