The system selects for the user a plurality of feed items, wherein a feed item is either a news feed story or an email. The system ranks the plurality of feed items using a ranking score determined for each feed item. The system presents the plurality of feed items to a user based on their ranking in response to receiving a vertical scroll input from the user. If the system receives a horizontal scroll input from the user, the system selects a subset of the plurality of feed items and presents them to the user in response to subsequent horizontal scroll inputs.
