Abstract: An automatic diver identification unit for providing motorized and multi-directional surface movement relative to a position of an underwater diver and to identify the position of a diver at the surface of a body of water. The automatic diver identification unit includes a buoyant main body portion having at least one interior chamber. An electronic control system is included within the automatic diver identification unit, and includes a diver movement detection switch. The unit operates to provide automated adjustment of a dive line relative to a signal received indicating the depth of the underwater diver. A propulsion means interconnected with the electronic control system identifies movement of the underwater diver and positions the unit above the diver. An identification signal identifies the location of the unit to other persons at the surface of a body of water.
